It is the dawn of the sixth millennium and humanity's greatest civilization
has fallen, leaving a new Dark Age to descend upon the Known Worlds.
Peasants huddle in ignorance and fear among the ruins of past grandeur,
waiting for the suns themselves to fade to cinders while haughty nobles,
scheming guilders, and righteous clergy squabble over the technological
remnants of the lost Second Republic. Will the new Emperor, Alexius,
halt this descent into darkness and restore humankind's belief in renewal
and progress, or will the Light fade at last from the universe?

Fading Suns Mush is based on the exciting gothic sci-fi universe created by Holistic Design, Inc. After a thousand years of war and savagery, humanity struggles to rise from the ashes of the fallen Second Republic, rallying behind the banner of the new Emperor of the Known Worlds, Alexius Hawkwood. Yet the suns themselves are fading, and dark forces threaten from the void. On the frontier planet Vargo, nobles, guilders, and clergy scheme against each other for power, even as they struggle to hold at bay ravaging barbarians, wicked heretics, and the evil that lurks in the Dark Between the Stars. The web site offers further information on the theme, as well as links to HDI?s informative Fading Suns homepage. Take a stand against the coming darkness, and claim your destiny on Vargo. It is the dawn of the sixth millennium, and the stars themselves are dying. Mankind has stumbled. Civilization has fallen, and humanity now dwells in a New Dark Age. Technology is scarce, and the huddled masses are ruled over by high nobles who hunt and play at war in humanity's final hours. Clergy preach in huge cathedrals dripping with gold and jewels, and merchant guilds hoard knowledge and technological remnants with a tight grip. Forces of chaos and anarchy nibble at the edges of society, and worse still black things from beyond history stir in the dark between the stars. Hope seems extinct - but in such times are heroes needed. Fading Suns is an epic space fantasy setting, a futuristic passion play in the style of the great medieval epics of King Arthur or Charlemagne transferred to a feudal far future where knights-errant brave the dark with a sword in one hand and a blaster in the other. Play on the Fading Suns MUSH ranges from court intrigue to investigating occult mysteries, bloody battle and questing adventures into the unknown. The MUSH has been open for over eight years and is entering a new chapter of its ongoing story - a chapter that needs new heroes to face the night. A saint has been foully murdered, and as the winter snows retreat a Waste Land has set in on the planet Vargo, leaving barren fields and blighted crops. Forests turn dark and overgrown, and black omens and blacker creatures intrude on the fire-circle of civilization. Play bold knights, pious clergy and investigative guilders come to seek answers and heal this broken planet, or join the ranks of the native rebellion that points to the tyrannical reign of nobles, Church and guilds as the source of the planet's contagion. Join in the intrigue between feuding houses, guilds and church sects, all seeking dominance over this troubled world. Knights, priests, guilders, aliens, psychics and the Dark Between the Stars - the Fading Suns MUSH is a place of politics and adventure, and it is ready for you. An extremely well-done MUSH set in the Fading Suns universe. The game was originally published by Holistic Design. The game is set on a recently-discovered world near the Kurgan border, where adventure, intrigue, and opportunity await. [4]
This MUSH is based in the Fading Suns RPG system, set on the world of Vargo. Far removed from the centre of the empre, every [5]

Fading Suns is based on the tabletop of the same name by Holistic Design. The setting is that of an age old star spanning empire that fell into a new dark age. Now that same empire is controlled by a feudal society in which nobles, guilds and the clergy vie for power. This setting encapsulates a number of spheres, as well as political, economic, intrigue, mysticism, horror, espionage, diplomacy combat and romance, among others. This in turn, allows for a massively broad range of character types to be create which all have a role to play in the story. In addition, this broad range of spheres allows for a MUSH with a slightly different feel to the usual pure combat/action nature of plots in other MUSHes. Players can take part in the occasional TPs, PrPs and other more traditional devices used, or they can benefit from and become part of the social element of this MUSH. This takes the form of a myriad of machiavellian political schemes, subversive machinations, diplomatic wrangling, economic negotiations or other such devices. In this way the characters and their factions can interact like nowhere else. The staff are all very competent, mature, even-tempered and friendly and, with the excellent players, provide a very warm, friendly, peaceful environment in which to roleplay. Furthermore, this is a *very* newbie friendly MUSH. Fading Suns is a relatively obscure system, and staffers and players alike are more than happy to cater for those with no previous knowledge of the system, setting, or even MUSHes in general. The playerbase is pretty well spread, internationally, allowing for activity at all times of day. Those in the US or Europe are especially likely to find the place active when they are online. All in all, an excellent, mature MUSH, thankfully free from the squabbles and petty bickering so commonplace on other MU*s. Superb.

As something of an addendum and a clarification, I think it is important to point out that, while there is a political element on Fading Suns MUSH, this is, by no means, the main focus of the story. The MUSH has an anti-competitive RP ideology. Stories, plots, themes are RP tend heavily toward the telling of a story. Whether this is the grand tale of the redemption of a planet from the looming threat of destruction, or a meeker, more personal tale of a simple freemen in danger of losing his livelihood, depends on how each player immerses their character in the game. First and foremost, Fading Suns is about roleplaying, the weaving of a tale and exploring many great issues through the interactive, collaborative-storytelling medium
