Vienna is sometimes described as one of the grandest, and at the same time most compact, capital cities in Europe. It certainly is among the oldest. Founded 500 BC, the city originally was a Celtic settlement called 'Vedunia' for river in the woods. In 15 BC, it became a Roman frontier city called Vindobona, guarding the Roman Empire against Germanic tribes to the north. During the Middle Ages, Vienna was home to the Babenberg Dynasty and in 1440 it became residence city of the Habsburgs from where the city eventually grew to becomes the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.
