The world of Fushigi Yuugi is set in an alternate universe that resembles feudal Asia. The primary means of entrance into this world from the modern world is through reading a magical book touched by the world's Beast Gods: the Shijin Tenshi no Sho, the Four Gods Heaven and Earth. Three Wishes takes place in this world, three hundred years after the great Konan-Kutou war; the feudal era has moved into an industrial revolution, and the middle class is growing. So, too, is natural trauma: not all are happy with Imperial rule, and the world itself seems to quake at times.
