I've been playing BR for about 10 years or so. I keep comming back when I get free time in my life. I've had the same character for years, and yet every time I get on I still have people rooting for me to level. It's not that it's hard to do so, I just have that little time. It home away from home, and there's always somewhere new to explore. Please try it out, and say "hi" to everyone for me. :P

This is, in my opinion, the best mud out there. I've played on quite a few and I always come back here. With 50 mortal levels and 100 hero levels to play, over 100 areas and more rooms than i can count, I always find something new. I;ve been playing for 2+ years now, and I never get bored when im online. The newbie helping system is incredible, and the community we have is the friendlist. The immortals are almost always willing to lend a helping hand. If you've never played here, give a try. I would give BR 5 stars out of five.

wow, I’ve been meaning to do this for a while so here goes. After being with Barren Realms for more than 7 years, i have to say, by far, it is the best MUD I’ve ever been Privileged to be on. Many a times i have found myself on for twelve hour increments, whether I’m fighting to level up or just sitting around and talking to the many friends i have acquired. I've been to maybe 20 or 30 other MUDs in the time ive been on Barren Realms and within a week, i couldn't stand the other MUDs and found myself back on BR. The areas are amazingly well designed and are so diverse you can find almost anything. From Smurfs to Zeus, from Rocky Horror Picture Show to Candy Land. The layout is amazing and is very easy to learn. With seven different races, and a newer race of Demons, you will find all kinds of challenges. The people are friendly to people that are brand new to MUDs and veterans to MUDs alike. I would have to say that if you were looking for an overall good MUD to play at and communicate with others, Barren Realms is where its at.

I have been on many, many, many muds, and this is by far my favorite. If you ever need help there is always someone there to asist you, always. Even if it's trying to retrieve something you lost or just to help you get better armor. Everyone I have ever met on this board has been friendly and fun to chat/mud/quest with. I would, and have definitley recommended it to anyone. They also send out a monthly newsletter (per your request on the website) that has all kinds of information about the mud, ideas, suggestions, interviews and usually a lot of hilarious stuff as well. Even when I don't have time to play I still read the newsletter and feel in touch with the community. I've had a character on this mud for 5 or 6 years and it just keeps getting better.

If you are reading this, you are likely looking for a mud. Well, I can say with confidence that Barren Realms is a great place to be. We have a massive world map and plenty of friendly people to help you on your way. I have been playing BR for a fair amount of time, and I for sure don't know even a tenth of the places and secrets. There is always a new place to explore and new things to fight. We aren't PK, but, if you want to beat your chest and try to smack arround your BR friends, we do have a nice arena where you can get your jollies. To conclude my very short review, come visit BR and give us a few levels! I've found it a fun and friendly place and I am sure you will too!

Barren Realms is a thriving, well-established mud with many players over the years and a strong, competent staff. We are a friendly mud with a great community and fun new additions such as interesting original areas and a completely unique demon remort race! This race is completely from our sick little minds and you grow all sorts of fun limbs randomly on level. Each one does something different and fun. The mud is great for beginners and has fun bits for old-timers alike.

Barren Realms is growing with new areas added monthly. The races are well balanced and generally unique in their play styles. Demons, the newest race, are amazing to play and highly addictive. This is a place I'm proud to call my home. Barren Realms: Between the orcs and the firenewts, you will find a friend.
TopMUDSites.Com Review by on Feb 4, 2004
If you like a friendly player base with a newbie-friendly codebase this mud is for you. But if you want any sort of player diversity I don't recommend it. There are no classes. Only races. Only thing that separates you from someone of another race is a couple of skills that you can't become proficient at. Otherwise, this is a very good established mud.
TopMUDSites.Com Review by on Feb 4, 2004
Barren Realms MUD is a well-established mud that is nearly ten years old. It is stable, well-coded and constantly evolving. It is a friendly, easy-to-learn merc base that now has a completely unique remort race - demons. Imagine having random limbs, eyes, and other gross parts popping out of you on leveling, and each one does something different! We have plenty of original areas, user-friendly code, and fun awaiting you.

I've been playing Barren Realms for a very long time now and everyday I am thankful for all that they have given me in terms of enjoyment and emotionally as well. First of all, it's a fun place to play. You can kill a huge variety of mobiles from smurfs to Sir Aurthur and even Santa Claus and the Grinch. There are literally thousands of rooms to explore all over the Realms and all the areas have been written by mortals, heroes and immortals alike. The races are fun and unique and the amount of leveling availavle to players is fantastic. The best thing about BR though, are the people and the incredible sense of community that we have. Don't take my word for it though, I suggest you log onto www.barrenrealmsmud.com and check it out for yourself you won't regret it :)

Ok, I've been playing this MUD for 8 or 9 years. It was the first MUD I ever tried and the only one that I ever stuck to. To give a few reasons, most of the people who play on the MUD are nice, those who aren't don't stick around. There are plenty of people willing to help if you have questions, need to get your corpse back, or need an overall helping hand. BR is very easy to get used to. I've played, or attempted to play other MUDs where I couldn't even bring up a help file, and nobody out of the 200 that were on at the time had the decency to ask if I needed help. Moving around, talking, picking things up, examining, it's all very straight forward. When you are a "newbie" people don't try to avoid you, and you aren't banned from using the "chat" channel until a certain level. When you show up you are considered an equal. In the desc. of BR on this site it shows that RolePlaying is allowed. Please understand that allowed means you can do it if you want. I know I've avoided trying out certain MUDs because you HAD to RP. I have seen a few quests, which are not manditory, where the person running it required the participants to RP. Any other time people type as they would normally speak. Anyway, people say try out our MUD, ooo try ours. Really I would suggest checking out many MUDs there are a lot of good ones out there, and in your process of searching stop by BR and give it a try, at least for 5 days or 10 levels, by then you should be hooked. What could it hurt? The always kind, HappyCamper

I have been an imm on Barren realms for about half a year and have been playing the mud for almost seven years. It was my first mud and as far as that goes it is a good one. The school is very well laid out and there is usually at least one hero or imm on who will help you get started and show you around. The race and practice systems are also pretty simple and easy to understand. My favorite part about playing BR is exploring the areas. There are many to choose from at all the levels, most of the written originally for BR and a good number of those by people who still play the mud (including two written by me!). A number of the areas mix humor with interesting lay outs to a fun exploration that is not overly serious. Similarly, the players on BR are quite friendly and not overly serious ;). The newest addition to the mud is the new remort race, demon, which allows you to go back through all the levels with a different play style after you get to the top (151) the first time. Overall, BR is a fun, welcoming mud that always wants new people so if it sounds like the kind of mud you like, please stop by and say hi.

I can talk to someone about Barren Realms MUD the whole day. There’s just so much to talk about. It is an old MUD opening around August of 1994 and I can proudly say that Barren Realms MUD is doing great!! I’ll do a rating of the MUD based on my own opinion (1-10, 10 being the highest) Gameplay: 8 Value: 10 Tilt: 9 At first, you may find Barren Realms MUD a bit depressing... there’s a couple of hard times getting your corpse and whatnot. There’s also the unbeatable request about the enhancing procedures. They all have their points (which are really good actually) and this makes this mud balanced. The coders listen to the request of other players. If they don’t like the idea or have a better idea about it, they tweak it a little making a better version of idea v1.0. After you get along with the hardships comes the fun. You get to group to people 5 levels around your level. You can see the magnificent powers of elves and druids. The utters of the elves that makes your whole group invisible against a horrible mob. The concentration of druids as their heal you. The dwarves that bashes your way through the massive amount of mobs. The illithids that strengthen the group’s defense. Humans who are just awesome kick-boxers. You can also see how the powerful birds become warriors as “Avians”. The powers of these avians are just unreal, they can get sense creatures from different lands, even underwater! If you get bored leveling, Barren Realms MUD holds a quest almost everyday. A Quest Team has been formed some time ago and I’m a apart of it. I’ll assure you that as long as one of us is breathing, there’ll be a quest running every time you log on. It will probably be an ongoing quest from sometime ago but there’s ALWAYS a quest. In my point of view, it is a hobby to do quests at three... Read More

BR is an excellent place to play full of friendly people. We really try for the friendly aspect, but there is also some competition and lots of quests. There has recently been some new features added that really enhance the play, such as a new race that is incredibly addictive. The immortals are very approachble and we have a player driven idea and enhancement system that funnels new ideas and energy into the mud.

From the first moment I logged onto Barren Realms, I have felt welcome. The heroes are all newbie friendly, giving advice, showing you round and getting you off to a good start. With 50 Mortal levels, 100 hero levels (plus the chance to redo the hero levels 3 times) and on top of that Remort is now in, so you can do it all over again. The areas are varied and very well written, maps are easily obtainable (and they are up to date). The Immortals are well respected for their fairness and approuchabilty. All in all a good mud, that I keep comming back to time and time again. Dont take my word for it, come and visit.

I used to mud here 6 years ago (I left to go do other things besides MUD) then I recently came back and the main reason why I did so was because how friendly this mud is and how well it's put together. A well populated mud, but not overrun to the point where people don't know each other or have the time to help a newbie. The mortal levels 1-51 are really JUST THE BEGINNING of this mud. There's a unique Hero system with 100 extra levels and that's not even the end of it, but just the beginning! BR is constantly changing and growing in both little and large ways. I'm glad I came back :) and love to meet new people.

I have been with Barren Realms for about four years now, maybe more. I'd have to say the best part of it is the community. People are generally friendly, helpful, accepting and respectful, especially the immortals. Also, it's an ever-changing environment, and the average player can help with the process. There are always new areas in the process of being written, new ideas being considered and implemented, quests being planned and executed... Overall, it's a great place to smush things or just hang out.
TopMUDSites.Com Review by on Apr 2, 2003
As a member of Barren Realms for well over 6 years, I've seen the mud come through prosperous as well as difficult times. I've seen changes in ownership and the rise and departure of the immortal staff. I've risen from the ground up to one of the highest ranking regular players. Through all of that, Barren Realms has done nothing but flourish. Regular code additions make it an ever-evolving place as new as the day I arrived so long ago. With a completely revolutionary race (Demons) and others in discussion, Barren Realms is not only a phenomenal place for any level of mudder today, but offers the chance to watch it grow into an even better MUD tomorrow. BR has a focus on community just as much as it focuses on gameplay creating an atmosphere of friendship and warmth that other MUDs tend to lack. Global channels can be filled with conversations ranging from gameplay to politics to general giddiness. The fast and furious gameplay allows for the hack-and-slasher to have a ball, while the hundreds of detailed areas give the explorer months of entertainment through discovery and reading. Simply, BR has something for everyone, and if you're not there already, you're missing out.

I have been here with Barren Realms off and on since it first started in 1994. Like all good things, it kept getting better through the years. With 150 levels there is sure to be plenty of fun for time to come. Even if that is not enough, then you can always rehero (play the last 100 levels over again). Also, you can remort (start over at level 1 as a special demon race). Filled with a HUGE world of unique and challenging areas, BR is an adventurer's dream. The best part of playing here has to be the people. Everyone is friendly and very open to newcomers, willing to offer help or advice to anyone. So if you are an long-time mudder or a true newbie, Barren Realms is the place to be!

TopMUDSites.Com Review by on Mar 21, 2003
To put it briefly, Barren Realms is the most fun of all the muds i've tried. There are easily over 100 completely distinct areas, nearly all contributed by players and thus fully new and explorable, not just repeats of the common areas found in many other muds. The race system allows greater diversification from the standard classes, as players choose on a per-ability basis which "out of guild" skills/spells they learn, and suffer an experience penalty based on those choices. Players may thus become very focused on their chosen dicipline and level more quickly, or take more time to become more wide ranging in proficiency. There are 7 mortal races, allowing for varied play styles to be acomodated, as well as a remort race for those players having reached "avatar" at level 151. Levels 1-50 are "mortal", and it is very common to see groups exploring together, while 51-151 are "hero" levels, set apart in order to avoid mishaps with mortals (your level 4 kender getting plastered all over the wall by a level 130 mob wouldn't be much fun). Players are in general very helpful in general, and especially helpful towards new players. The help files are wonderfully clear, and important ones (help rules, etc) are available in several languages. By all means, come check us out. Any further questions you may have will gladly be answered by any of the players online.

If you like AOL and Yahoo! chat rooms you'll love Barren Realms 'MUD'! If you want to play a GOOD WELL MADE MUD, avoid Barren Realms 'MUD'. Stupid areas including many from modern pop culture really do little for the atmosphere of the world. The world itself is broken as each area is completely unrelated, this prevents any in-character interaction, which is funnily enough not permitted anyway. *No Atmosphere *World does not follow single over-riding theme. *The above prevents role-playing. *The above is prevented by pointless rules established to keep order. *No clans. If you think you would enjoy being in this type of environment coupled with the inane babbling of the locals, then by all means play Barren Realms 'MUD'. If like most people you play MUDs to play a game and not participate in a big pretty, colourful AOL chat room (with the LOL'ers to match) then avoid Barren Realms 'MUD' at all costs. It's honestly not worth the time, even if you have all the time to spare.

Barren Realms was my first MUD. I have tried others since but I just have to keep coming back. It has by far the friendliest atmosphere and new players are really made welcome, usually within seconds. With upcoming changes the MUD will be both a haven for new players and a challenge for veterans. If you pick any MUD, go for this one - you won't be disappointed.

I know I have already left a review of BR last year, but I feel the need to add to it now. All the reviews talk about the mud, areas and eq, I would like to to talk about the players. I've fought through all the levels, got killed by the best, but nothing compares to the people there. I am dyslexic and didn't do to well in school, when I decided to try my hand at building a area for BR I honestly believed that I would not get very far because to me the builders guide might aswell have been in dutch for all I could understand of it. I had my theme, I had my area all mapped out on paper I presented my plan to the Imp and she gave me the go ahead and some hints to help me along. I must have bugged every single imm, builder and any one else who would give me the time of day for advice, and finally it was complete. My area is was returned to me quite a few times for corrections but in the end it was excepted and is now uploaded. Maybe you think Wow Big deal (not) but from a person who in all honesty didn't even know what a period was, I am proud to say I am a Barren Realms Player. Maybe instead of looking at other peoples opinions it might be better just to come and take a look yourself.

I have been playing on this mud for a while. I switch back and forth between many others, yet i still keep on coming back to Barren Realms. Barren Realms help is outstanding, and me hearing that people left bad reviews about it makes me mad. The hero's, immortals and even fellow mortals are more than willing to go out of there way to help you. The moment i started i had about three different characters helping me. For a first time mudder it was a little overwhelming. But i got the hang of it quickly thanx to them. I'm still in the process of becoming a hero, but without the mud's help that would have never been a possibility. And the people are great people as well as helpful. Quite a few of them i have began to talk to outside of barren realms and am happy to be one of their friends. Barren Realms is constantly changing and improving itself. It's getting better by the day. I have played on more extensive and more complicated muds. All of which cannot compare to the fun of Barren Realms. Have fun playing in the Mud. See ya around. ~RadicalEd

I have read the other reviews and thought maybe i should just submit one myself. Being a player of about 4 years on Barren Realms i have found it to be one of the best muds ever. I have met many people and made many friend on BR. Its true that some people are mean but we try to keep them from yelling at anyone. I was amazed by the reviews that said that BR isnt a friendly mud. I cant see how people wouldnt like BR. People are constantly helping out with everything from where to fight to problems with your computer. Most of the people have a sense of humor and have fun with the mud. I think everyone should at least give it a try before judgeing it on my or anyone elses reviews. Dio

I have read all the reviews up to this point, and have decided to add my opinion. BR is the first and only mud I have ever played. I never felt the need to go anywhere else. From the very first day, I was treated kindly and with respect. I knew nothing about mudding, and the hero that helped me, stayed with me for at least two hours, making sure that I was able to get around on my own. Then he told me that if I were to need anything in the future to contact him. I don't remember who he was, as it has been over 2 years since I started, but he made starting out a wonderful experience. As to the community of BR, it's like nothing I've ever seen before. These are great people. They are some of my closest friends, and I am so glad that I became part of this mud because I wouldn't have met them otherwise. Also, anyone that says that our Imms and Heroes are mean or spiteful, is ridiculous. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even when I have unknowingly upset an Imm or another Hero, I was never treated badly. I believe that the people that wrote those unhappy reviews just didn't understand the concept of having good manners on the mud just as you would in real life. Anyway, I'll stop babbling now. BR is wonderful. Come see for yourself, but beware, it might become your new addiction. It has been mine for over 2 years now :) Happy Mudding To All -Belle-

I decided to look for a nud with a difference as the mud I normally play was getting a little stale. I look at the latest reviews to see what was going on and i saw a review by a char called dreamkeeper and I decided to check it out. The moment I logged on I felt welcomed and low and behold dreamkeeper came to greet me. I was shown the different way this mud is done instead of trying to figure your way round with automated prompts a actually person comes to you explaining and guiding you thought the first few levels. Which I found to be a great help as this is the first mud I have seen without classes and clans! As a 6 year vetran of muds I would just like to say to Kiri you have a excellent mud there and if dreamkeeper is anything to go by for your standards then long may you prosper and grow.

& months ago I was talking to a friend in a chat prog and was getting a bit angry cause his replies were so slow so I asked him what he was doing? He explained about a game he was playing and it sounds different so I got it from the first moment I entered someone came straight to me and explained the whole game to me. I had never played any sort of roleplay game online or off. After a few hours (yes Hours) I was left to try it on my own from that day I have spent 6 or more hours a day playing B.R and I have to admit I am addicted. The people on there are great and are always ready to give help and guidance, I am now a level 103 elf (yes that means I am a hero) But I would like to state I have never spoken down to anybody as I am still learning and if I ever did talk down to even a level 2 player I would delete my char cause it aint worth my self respect. The Imm's have always been very open and are always ready to help when they can, maybe some people dont like the few rules we have but you have to remember we are a visited by all age groups and as such some rules are needed. But as a virgin mudder that I was. I thank Kiri and all B.r players for making my first mud experience a excellent one and I wont tell you to come and see cause thats your own choice but if by any chance you do look for me and say hi. P.s I would like to say a special thanks to oldguy for sorting me out on more than a few occasions *hugs*

I've played many muds over the years, and I always come back to Barren Realms. In the end, its not the size of the world or the code, but the community that makes a mud, and Barren Realms will welcome you with open arms and make you feel at home. I recommend BR especially for those new to mudding, or for anyone who wants to play in a mud with a warm welcoming community.

When I first started with Barren Realms, I was a total newcommer when it came to muds. Totally clueless, I stumbled into BR with little more than curiousity of what a mud would be like. Someone instantly came to my aid, and asked if I needed help. He taught me the basic commands of muds, as well as the basic commands used in BR. Before I knew it, I was stumbling around with a purpose. I was actually enjoying this foreign concept of a game. I began to meet people, and grow more accustomed to the layout of muds. I began to advance in levels and in status, and started becoming good friends with several people. Sure, occasionally I did try other muds, but none would hold my interest as well as BR did. I actually looked forward to coming into BR each day just to see the faces of the friends I had met the day before. Days turned to weeks, which turned into months, and into years. From starting as a lowly newbie, totally clueless in the ways of mudding, and being aided by some of the friendliest people on the net, I eventually became one of the people who helped others. It's this friendliness that has caused me to stay with BR for so long. Not only was it the first mud I've ever played, but I'm sure it will be the last. I truly feel that I've found my home on this wonderful mud.

In reply to Pin's latest review, I argue with Kiri all the time and I don't get myself denied. BR is fair on opportunities and they give you pleanty of chances as long as you follow the rules, like in every day society BR too has rules. As I've said before butt kissing won't get you anywhere here, and I'm mature enough to admit I know from experience. :) Just my 2 cents worth, Bluei

Good Day, I wanted to submit once again about the Realms. Having played this game for years, one of my characters was denied today. Denied is their form of removing you from the game. Cause of this was a Jailing of another character after being bated into a public chat conversation by a Avatar and IMM. Reason, comes down to my first submition on this site. A couple IMM's and Avatar's took it upon themselves to show that as long as you cow down to them, you are ok. You do not argue with Kiri and you do as told, being a good little ego booster. I can not take from the fact that the game is a well balanced play area, no matter my resentment. However, you enter at the risk of being verbally abused by the Hero's and Avatars, spoke down to, and humilated by them on a daily basis. Many of previous IMM's that have been treated the same as I in BR had had enough and made a new mud. I suggest for a real friendly game, with all the help coming down from real people without the ego's involved, you try it...pull up Eylsian Plain's in your mud front end and go play with real players...where it is friendly, and fun! Formally, Pin, Zephy, Whocares of Barren Realms.

Well, since I've been accused repeatedly of writing all of the negative reviews here (which, by the way, I have not) I figured I might as well do what I was accused of and leave my own review. Barren Realms, the mud, is great. The areas are great, with many, *many* original areas unique to BR. The levelling is challenging depending on how your play your character, but fun. That's one of the things I like the most. Choosing just your race, you can still be totally different than any other, say, elf, on the mud, because there are so many different ways to play your character. You can play an elf who kind of splits the difference between fighter and mage, or, like I did, my elf was strictly fighter. Not the common way to play your elf, but how much trouble are you going to have bashing in a mob's face when you have 4-10x the hp that other elves have? I enjoy the gameplay, the structure, and the uniqueness of BR. What I don't like is the "high school-esque cliques". I received my first batch of harassment at a very low level. After I had reached avatar4, the harassment began to build. I found myself outside of the cliques. Once you're outside, forget it. I became the scapegoat for all of BR's problems. I was not the first to be scapegoated for all of BR's problems, and I won't be the last. It's entirely possible that *you* could be the next "bad apple". Basically, a note that was left on *another* mud sums up what the problem on BR is. It reads, quote: "One thing I forgot to add, if you want to be an immortal, you must be able to put your duties above your real life friendships. You will have to treat all mortals the same regardless of the fact they may be your friends. This is probably the hardest part of being an immortal, and you and friends... Read More

I've been playing on Barren Realms for 3-4 years now and I have to say it's the best mud I've had the pleasure of playing. Reguarding what previous people have said about power struggles and unfriendly people....that's life for you. Barren Realms, like every mud, and life in general has it's "moments" when people drive you insane from rudeness, insensitivity, and pure hatefulness (I've only encountered a few people who are hateful and spiteful beaings, they run rare and few at BR) BUT, like any other place in the whole world, there is SO much love here. Barren Realms' people are friendly, caring and helpful, not just in the playing sense. Like a lot of teenagers, life is a real pain in the butt sometimes, but BR has helped me through all the issues that have had to deal with, and I probably wouldn't be here if it weren't for all the people there. Anyway, I'm going to stop rambling to let you figure out how wonderful Barren Realms is. But don't take my word for it, come try it out for yourself :) ~*Bluei*~

As far as game play Barren Realms is easy to pick up the comands if your an advanced MUDer or even an Begining MUDer. I would highly recomend BR to any new player who likes a little spice in there life.

I have been on BR for a while. My first hero came at a time when there was only 51 levels, did I say first? ONLY hero. Many changes have come, one thing remains the same. Valance (city of the hero's) is full of wanna bees. I have several characters on this mud, and will not hero another. For ease of play, I normally keep the chat channel off. I have been referred to as cheeky by the IMP's of the game when I have remained true to my morals. Friendly, hummmm, interesting way of phrasing it...generally you can count on a hero or two referring to you as a "Lowly mort". IF the hero's are not to busy power mudding to help a newbie, they do it for the "perks" given out by the imm's. Don't get me wrong, there are three imm's for sure I count as friends, fair and will talk to you. For instance, Kiri has a trigger or alias, or did, that would slay you should you do a look at her. Now that is what I call friendly :) I have found another mud, that was started by previous IMM's of BR, now why would they leave BR if it is so friendly? Now why has Pin stayed around fed all this time? When I entered the game, there was two "Morts" that took him under their arm. They taught him to mud and have fun. Funny though, the three of us hero'd together, one deleted with another IMM over game politics with IMP's..the other ran off to new muds..I miss you Morrigu. You want to IMM in the game, I agree with one of the other statements, with one correction, plant the lips as soon as you hero, it greases the wheels. The game does have a well balanced game scheme, with many areas of fun. One of the greatest things I can say about the simple mudding in BR is the grouping, players do with... Read More

When i started playing muds in 95 i stumbled across BR and have stayed ever since. It's a really friendly community to start and stay in, you don't have to fear about not being accepted as long as you are willing to play within the (few) rules set by the admins. Newbiehelping is great, even as a complete newbie-mudder there has to be no fear about not being able to play the game. Since you don't have to choose a class at the start character creation isn't a tough thing to do, either, but the races still are individual and different to play. Much fun is that you can choose to learn other classes spells and skills (to a certain extend) and that multiplaying is allowed. In other words: it is possible to just play the game as a loner or to go and play with friends. During the time i played many things have changed, new races to choose, more levels added, a lot of really nice and original areas, new skills/spells and commands to use are available now. And there are more to come. The imms/heroes try to do their best to keep the mud as it is in attitude but at the same time never forgot it's mainly about having fun. So - especially when you are either looking for a nice new mud to stay in and make friends or when you are new to mudding and want to try out a friendly and fun community, i'd highly advise to check us out - after all these years i still am addicted ;).

BR is a great MUD. I've been playing for about a year or so, and I just haven't found any better MUD out there. The imms and heroes are great - especially to newbies. I felt welcome there the second I logged in. The areas are fun, different - everyone has a place where they can do well and enjoy themselves. It really is the friendliest MUD out there.

Having actively mudded on BR for years now, I have a tendency to agree with Pie Face and FunkyMunky. I really enjoy exploring the wide variety of the areas written especially for BR. The areas cover many different themes, and there are often times many areas that just aren't explored at all, giving you the ability to locate and use equipment no one else uses. I've found that there is a major power stuggle on BR; those people who fight for the voice of the meek, and those who want to silence them. Generally the second group of people wins, and you find yourself well on the outside of the 'in crowd' if you don't align with them from the start. If you want to work very hard on your characters for years and then have all of that work stripped from you, by all means, mud here. If you're looking for the TRULY friendliest mud on the 'net, I'd recommend looking elsewhere as that statement is a blatant lie. There really are good muds out there, sometimes you just need to look hard to find them. This, unfortunately, as great as the areas are, is not one of them.

As IMP, I can say truly that imms and heroes on BR have honestly tried to keep BR as friendly and community-oriented as possible. Sometimes our brand of humor (which ranges from silly to sarcastic) doesn't sit well with everyone ;). However, most times we do just fine and I think most people get the jokes ;) Come check it out and enjoy the fun! We've been around a really long time and people are willing to help. :)

I feel I can offer an unbiased review of BR moreso than the previous two. True, the fighting and rp aspect of BR is great. With a mostly original world, BR is fun to explore, and can keep you busy for months. The people aspect of BR is another story though. I find lots of people on BR who aren't very bright, and just downright rude. The majority (keep in mind a majority is 51%+) of the heroes and imms think they're above you on a human level rather than a character level, and are tough to handle at times. BR advertises themselves as having the friendliest people on the 'net, and that is just not true. Granted, there are lots of wonderful people on BR, but unfortunately the group of people who practically live on BR give everyone a bad reputation. On the bonus side though, if you've ever wanted to be an immortal, all you have to do is play BR, make it to level 151, and then firmly plant your lips on each individual imms behinds and you're virtually guaranteed to be picked as an imm in the future. I highly recommend if you choose to play BR, that you stay away from the cliques. Give BR a try, don't take my word for it. ;)

I've played on Barren Realms MUD since 1995. It's one of over dozen muds I've played on, but it's the only one that I continue to play on. The reason is simple: Barren Realms is administered by fair-handed and likable people who understand that the most important aspect of a mud is its sense of community. As an avatar, I now travel the Barren Realms offering advice and aid to younger, less experienced inhabitants of the Realms, and sharing stories and memories with the old timers. Come check out this mud! I think you'll make it your new mud home!

This mud is wonderful! They help newbies get started and it's not as confusing as a lot of other muds. You only need to pick a race not a race and a class. You have a chance to learn spells and skills from other classes also. 151 levels, 50 mort, 100 hero levels. And remort coming soon with a very original race available only to those that have made it all the way through. The people are friendly and helpful. There are maps for sale in the main city to almost every area on the mud. Many of the areas are written by people who have played there and more areas are being added all the time. Come and check it out! Just beware, it might be addicting. ;o)
