I played at HE for about 3.5 years. I loved it, I clicked with the other players. I made friends with staff and they were super nice. The people were hilarious and friendly. And though I didn't have a problem fitting in as a newbie, I did notice that other did. At first I thought, "Hey, maybe its their fault?" But as the years passed I did notice that it was rather clique-ish around here. The adult faction began to grow because players began joining the Ministry of Magic. And in short, it was like the big IT boom back in the 90s. Once people saw the amazing potential and fun in it, people started joining left and right. It drove the staff crazy! And then the Dark faction grew and caused more trouble. ICly, it cause the Hogwarts students faction to be put on restrictions because of safety. And that's perfectly understandable. But there was such a big HUGE concentration on the Ministry faction. Most of the TPs that occurred ALWAYS had the ministry dealing with it somehow. TPs for students lessened, TPs for Healers lessened. It was just MINISTRY, MINISTRY, VOLDEMORT, MINISTRY! I got bored, because I didn't have a ministry character. I had a student character. Not only that I was absent from the game for a bit of time. When I got back it was difficult to fit back in, and catch up on the stuff that's happened. Everytime I tried to catch up, I felt like the other players were pushing me back out again. So after 3.5 years of playing on the game I just decided to retire. HE, you were fun but I did have my reasons. So Main Complaints: Cliques Faction Neglect Staff Favoritism
I actually played this MUSH for several years, got disenchanted and came back after a long absence. I was surprised that background information and descriptions gleened and slightly edited from my previous character was now, not acceptable. Upon log in, had trouble with setting age/year code. Background was too short, description unacceptable. These were all resolved with some trepidation on my part. I then paged the staffer who had @mailed me with more concerns only to be told not to page people who were off duty. I failed to see why paging somoene who had sent you a message was wrong, nor why I was being repremanded for not checking duty status when I didn't even know (and shouldn't be expected to know) the command to check. Was accused of having the wrong attitude, booted, and password changed. Old hands are warned that this place seems overly picky and political. Newbies are warned that you'll probably be accused of having a similarly 'wrong attitude' My advice, after years of MUSHIng? Stay away, far far away.
I just started playing on Hogwarts Express, but I already enjoy it. They have helpful greeters, a good chargen process, and a good grasp of theme. I /was/ slightly confused when I first connected. I was coming over from playing on only PennMUSH based games to a TinyMUSH. Some of the differences in commands took a little while to get use to, but it wasn't too hard. I do recommend reading all their room descriptions carefully, they have useful information. Which brings me to my first complaint. The lack of a Newbie Trail. They have a '+beginner' command you can use, but even so. I think this MUSH could benifit from a series of rooms explaining how to move, page, talk, @emit, and talk on coms. That said, their helpfiles are pretty comprehensive, and their news files have useful information. On the topic of their news files, though, there could be a little more information in them. As it is, you have to ask greeters for a lot of help, or at least I did. They could use a little more information about in theme descriptions and backgrounds, but overall it is good. Thier approval system is slightly annoying. For even a normal character, it must be approved. Since greeters cannot do this, I've been told that it'll take '1-3 days'. It would improve the game if this were laxer, and you could start RPing before final approval comes through. It is unlikely that an un-approvable item in the character that passed by the greeters is going to come up in RP before a staff member sees it, and if it does it can be retconned. My last comment is something that is probably impossible to solve, but worth bringing up anyway. The way that the theme for students works--being based around a school year--means that people who are not starting at the beginning of an IC year have less opprotunities to get into activities such as Quidditch. I'm not sure how this would be fixed, but I thought I'd bring it up anyway. Definitely worth playing! Has a largish active playerbase, enough that it looks like I'll be able to find RP very often. Also, the theme makes it easy for students to find RP with any other student, unlike other MUSHes, where there's a smaller culture that you have to find RP in. 7/10

I logged onto this MU* to check out the possibility for a good Harry Potter MU*---What I found was a true disappointment. First, they don't provide a message telling people who have newly logged on that '=new ' is the way to ask questions of staff while going through character generation. They leave this up to their 'newbie greeter' staff members, who weren't on the ball when I connected. On the same note, they don't provide a 'guest' character, in case someone who is simply curious about the MU would like to log on and check things out. Second, when asked about creating a character that would require an application (restricted types of characters,) one of the staffers told me that I would be better off creating a 'normal' character. When asked why, they said it gave them a chance to get to know a person's roleplaying style and it would give the applicant a better chance of being approved. When I said that a person who applies with a good, solid application should be approved on the basis of their application and not on their roleplaying style, the staffer said they'd found that method to be lacking. What, precisely, is the point of writing up a detailed application if all it takes to get approved is creating a 'normal' character and doing a little dance for the staffers? Why even have an application process? It is my advice that this MU is seriously lacking in social skills, helpfulness and their priorities are out of alignment. If you are new to MUs, I would suggest looking elsewhere. If you are a serious applicant, again, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Hogwarts Express MUSH has issues. That's the nicest way I could say it. There's several little things that needle at begining players, and then there's the whole nasty subject of the major issues. I think, primary among them is some very heavy handed staff. The smallest issues will often result in everything from having a character removed, to even total sitebanning. It has, in fact, happened rather recently. Then, there's the question of the moral police. In recent months, the game's staff have taken it onto themselves to dictate just what a person can morally play. To put it midly, they are not receptive to homosexual characters, or players. THere is a rather long bulletin board post that says in part: (taken from the actual post) 2. Sexuality (It's the 70's folks! In conservative Britain!) Yes, this includes homosexual revelations. The policy I will take on all sexual issues is, "Don't ask, don't tell", meaning that it should NOT become the issue of an ic teacher or therapist, and you should not use it to make fellow players uncomfortable icly. Know your audience, use your discretion, as I will not dismiss complaints. This arose, after an openly homosexual player, had asked another for an IC date. (Female/Female) The girl was promptly sitebanned and the issue quickly swept under the rug. The problem is, now there is a rather understood current that if you are Gay, then you are not welcome on hogwarts express. There's several other issues that stem from the staff's inexperience. It's not uncommon to ask a question of some of the higher staff and have them either snap at you over asking it, or even write up a rather lengthy bbpost about how it's been outlawed now. The problem is, there are people in the "in crowd" who are allowed to do as they please. Do I sound bitter? Yes, I guess I am. I can't refer this game to anyone who wants a place where they will be accepted readily. However, if you're looking for a challenge, a place where you're not sure what to expect each day and worrying if your one little innocent comment will get you sitebanned.

E-freaking-gads. Look, I don't even play this game. I don't run it. I'm in no way affiliated with it. And yet I feel compelled to step up and say: "What the hell?!" If Rejected had bothered to read through some news files or visit their website, he might have gotten a clue. If he'd done a little research into MUSHes, that probably would have helped too, because the commands he complains about are *common* among MUSHes and certainly not the sort of thing worthy of criticism. If you can't take the time to get to know a game or how it works, you aren't qualified to review it. It's that simple. Stick to the turf you know, Rejected, or get to know something about the strange new worlds before bouncing into them and expecting them to embrace you.
