PernMUSH is based on Anne McCaffery's Pern books (see 'news books'). It is set in the 10th Pass of the Red Star, which began in the last decade (the MUSH was originally set in the Interval just before the Pass). Roleplaying is based on cooperation, rather than competition, so there is no system of points or combat. 'news tinyplots' has more information on plot development. Pern was originally a Terran colony, but the Turns (years) of fighting the voracious spore Thread, which falls from the skies at regular intervals, have eroded the memory of Pern's origins to mere legend. The level of technology is medieval, generally speaking. The Pernese protection from Thread are the dragons of Pern and their riders, who live in the Weyrs. (see 'news weyrs' and 'news dragonriders') Most of Pern's population lives in the Holds or the Crafthalls. (see 'news characters', 'news crafts' and 'news holds') Though traders also move goods around the continent. (see 'news traders') In order to survive, Pern's inhabitants must cooperate, so armed conflict and wandering about the planet are extremely rare, if not all but abolished. A secure family and home is the most common background. PernMUSH does not recognize the AIVAS plot presented in several of the more recently published books, so there is no 'rediscovering' of technology in our game. However in the turns since the timeframe of the books, the strictures against women have eased and women can be Lady Holders, CraftMasters etc and can ride any colour, but bronze.
