Upgrade abilities, boost talents, raise important stats and more. * Newbie friendly Admin staff and game information. There is much to learn, but everything is geared towards helping. * NPC trading system for passive item acquisition. * Random exploration events provide alternate leveling methods. ! Former players will recognize this as MatMud. And former players from the Age of Legends at terminal.org are missed as well! The majority of the codebase has been revamped or replaced resulting in over three times the original program size. ProjectBob is a very large mud with many original features coupled with time-tested ideas. We are a newbie friendly group with an active player base and many conveniences to improve your experience. Highlights include: - Diablo-based random equipment system. - Choose a class or customize your own by combining different skill groups. - Many detailed areas with quests that save player progress (400 quests and growing). - Randomly generated missions with adapting mobs for endless play. - Near limitless character development. - Activities such as NPC Arenas, fishing, treasure hunting, exploration rewards, special events, player housing, clan territory struggles, and raising pets are only some of the ways to keep yourself entertained. - PK and RP are both optional. This game is designed to be fun to play alone and in groups. - Many options to customize your experience. - Players never lose what they've earned. Emphasis on fun above frustration. Don't let the mud name fool you. We like serious, yet relaxed players. The game takes a bit to learn, but everyone is captivated by its endless depth and thoughtfulness. The mud is also in a constant state of improvement where feedback matters. [2]

I started MudDing some 12-13 years ago, honestly I've lost count. I've tried countless servers and was never truly impressed until I came across Age of Legends (AoL) I played there for several years getting to know the admins and the players. Eventually AoL became an Idler's Paradise. I had heard that Matrim (one of the Admins at AoL) had created a new server and began looking into it I guess about a year after he'd gotten it up and running. So I hopped over and started my first character. Six years later I have yet to find a better MuD. The ease of gameplay and the rich environments has kept me enthralled through more characters than I care to count and more updates and code changes than I care to remember. I've seen a bit of drama. That can be witnessed through the other reviews here, though I strongly recommend you pass those up as inconsequential. Project Bob (I'll always think of it as MatMud, however) is an awesome example of what can be done with these simple yet unlimited worlds. A world that is constantly expanding and evolving into a place where new and old players alike will find it easy to traverse. Especially with the Tutors... Regular players that have taken the time to put aside their playtime when a newbie is in need of assistance. Now that's not to say that the Tutors will powerlevel you or get you items (In most cases) but any questions you have that are voiced when an Imm is not around are generally answered by those that are flagged as Tutors. The help database alone would give any normal player pause... It's nearly as expansive as the world itself. So even after six years of playing, through the drama and the downtime, the drastic changes to the minor things that affect the world strangely, I would gladly recommend this MuD to ANYONE who cared to try it. The possibilities here are endless! (And I don't mean that figuratively.)

Aye, Project Bob has the most features of any game i have ever seen. (period) Simply learning everything there is to know is a great feat that's going to take 100+ hours. Some may be turned off by this, I absolutely love it. And even if you only know a fraction of your available actions, its still very playable. And lets not forget how centered around the player this game is. Instead of taking your booty to back to the shop to sell, you can simply dump what you don't want in your recycling bin and poof instant cash. Or another example is the fastportal command which all players can use to easily navigate to where they want to go. Best mud ever.

I have played a lot of muds and I must say that my visit to Project Bob exceeded my expectations. I was only there for a day or so before a code update was implemented, and it was not the usual bug fixes that I'm so accustomed to elsewhere. These were real improvements and from what I've read in their news posts, this happens regularly. This mud is by far the most player-friendly that I've seen. I logged in to discover free portal, free identification of items, quests from the very beginning of the game, and no 'maxxing out' your character because they have almost limitless levels. I really enjoyed their group leveling system and could almost always find a group when I wanted to join one. There was also a lot to do on my own, especially my favorite, questing! If you're looking for a game that is based on fun, look no farther, this is definitely it.

I've had a rather lengthy tenure at Project Bob and seen it through it's many updates and retoolings. I was one of the early players who joined after playing at Matrim's earlier mud Age of Legends. Often during the early playtime here I was one of maybe a handful of people logged on (including the few Imms we had at the time). I'm not quite sure who the 'voice of the old school AoLers' is on the other review but I'll just say I respectfully disagree with the assumptions he/she makes. During my playtime on Bob I'll say it's been some of the most enjoyable I've had on an online multiplayer game. I've spent short stints in the popular graphical MMO's over the years (EQ, EQ2, WoW) but something always brings me back to PB. Maybe it's the game itself or the people I've met. I'll say by and large the people and staff of the mud have been one of the biggest factors on keeping me here. Always helpful and willing to listen to ideas and concerns. The actual mechanics of the game I could write pages on itself. I'll keep it short and say the depth and sheer variety in things to do makes it so it's hardly ever boring. If your thing is grinding solo or w/ groups, quests, missions, dueling, or even building your own private estate there is always something to do. One of the qualms I have with more traditional MMO's is the fact that unless you have hours to devote at a time nothing can really be accomplished. Here you can log on for 10 mins of 4-5hours and have fun and feel rewarded for you time. The game can be a little overwhelming at first for brand new players, but extensive tutorials and helpful players/staff are almost always there. Maybe this is rambling, but the main point as a whole I've enjoyed my time playing here at PB. It's one of the few games that has been able to capture my attention for such an extended period of time.

We played at Project Bob pretty much since it started, and many knew the owner for years before that. The game is simply amazing, but one of his new 'workers' of only about a year or so) got us, too. We never thought we'd have to leave, but sometimes that's the way life is. The owner never would have reprimanded us for the things his new worker branded us with, yet he stuck by the new worker's rule. In short, to those who have left, try not to take it personally. The imms on this mud decided not only to unfairly reprimand newer players, they also chose to snub several friends the owner had known for quite some time. Life is full of people like this.

I would agree with the above review. Project Bob is a really neat mud with lots of unique features, but it seems there's some sort of corruption and cover-up in the staff. Some players are siding with the staff, others are rising up to make this all public. In my short time playing, I felt uneasy there simply because of recent reviews. Beware of Bob. It's not worth the drama right now.

We've roamed Project Bob pretty much since it started, and many knew the owner for years before that. The game is simply amazing, but a couple of his 'aquaintances' drew swords, and yes, got us, too. We never thought we'd have to die, but sometimes that's the way life is. The owner never would have put us in harm's way or called called us 'mobs' as they did, yet he supported his aquaintances' slanderous tones. In short, to those who have also fallen by the wayside, try not to take it personally. The imms on this mud decided not only to allow the slaughter of new mobs, they they also chose to rename some of us that had known both the owners for quite some time. Life is full of people like this. Of course my words are completely accurate. After all, I too, have taken it upon myself to bark for everyone, whether they agree or not. *howl*

Wow. The only thing I have ever seen negative on PBOB is when someone starts causing a ruckus, or when someone forgets that there are eight and nine year olds on this mud. I mean really, an ID like F***You is very inappropriate. It seems to me the only problem here is these people dont want to play nice in front of children. I, for one, find it refreshing, that there is a place that cares about this. I am a dad and I would never show recommend sights to my son. Eh, I like playing mud with my boy. I love being a geek and so does he. Seems like there a few mean spirited people who did not get their way and decided to trash the mud. They have sown seeds of malcontent. I hope they realize that those seed will grow right up to their wake and affect them. Red Wolf

I have to agree with the above statements. There is extremely something going on with the staff of Project Bob. Players are treated unfairly and banned if one is to disagree with an IMM of any nature. For the stupidest reasons. Take the advice of players who have been there a while, left for a while and came back. It is so not worth the drama.
MudConnector.Com Review (Archived) by on Feb 23, 2009
This is a mud with amazing gameplay and a depth that I've never seen before. The problem is it's practically unplayable because of one of the staff members, Ariana. If you decide to start playing this game, I strongly recommend you stay on her good side by accepting anything and everything she says without question or you are out of there. I have been mudding for about 8 years and have never been in trouble for language or behavior before. However, I start playing this game and I'm instantly reprimanded by this particular staff member. During my first week on the mud, I say a word on the OOC channel I didn't even know was considered a swear word and got told to watch my language, which was fine. (Other people say worse things on there and never get reprimanded, the slot machine even says the word all the time.) I just didn't know it was considered an offensive swear word, after this I never repeated the word. At another point I used another word on clan channel that I didn't know was a swear word, and in the process of being told not to say that anymore she insinuated that I was a liar because I didn't immediately understand what I was being warned for. After this she joined the clan on her immortal to keep an eye on it. (Didn't call anyone names or anything like that, also thought clan channels were private.) After speaking to the mud owner about how I disliked being called a liar I was told to respect being called a liar by the staff and to accept warnings unconditionally. (All I did was ask what I was warned for because I honestly didn't know at the time), and to apologize to the imm in question for getting angry at her. In the process of being upset with her, I said nothing derogatory, nor did I use any profane words, I merely said I would like to know what I was being warned for. Are the players monsters to these people? Little children to keep in line in case they might do something bad? To me this is just way off anything I've ever ever seen before. I didn't apologize because I hadn't done anything wrong except question a warning I didn't understand, and react to being called a liar by the staff. To me, this warrants being called unfair treatment by select players, and I will never respect being called a liar by anyone when I have in fact been telling the truth. To me it seems as if thir view of players are that they are potential monsters, rule breakers and do not deserve to be treated decently in any way. I was also gagged on all channels after being attacked verbally by someone and defending myself against it, this is verified by other people who were present at the time. When i'm told to stop fighting, I say I feel I have the right to defend myself and suddenly I can't speak anymore. The player who was attacking me (for helping someone else, I have to say that) got nothing. When I asked why I was nochanned, Ariana told me that I am to listen to what she says instantly, what the other person did was not her concern, because he shut up when she said it. Basically, if you enjoy abusing other players, this is the place to go. Those who attempt to defend themselves get the boot because defending yourself is stirring up the entire mud and ruining the game for everyone. In this place, when the imms say "jump", you will get in trouble for asking "how high?" because you didn't jump quickly enough. Asking "why?" is unheard of. What this tells me of the staff on this game is that they do not appreciate people who are able to think for themselves. The admins goal are to create a game with a wonderful atmosphere with no fighting, but what is really going on is players snitching on eachother, people being unfairly treated by overzealous Ariana, and a great amount of distrust among the players, as everyone are afraid to say the wrong thing even by accident, only to be snitched at by someone completely random. And you really do get into deep trouble no matter what your intentions were. This is such a shame because the game itself is wonderful, and it would be the best place i've ever been to if not for that one staff member. Her unfair treatment of players is also accepted by the mud owner. What makes it especially difficult, is that noone dares speak up against it in fear of being promptly removed from the game, and so my impression is it will never change. According to older players, this has been getting worse and worse. Why am I writing this? Because I don't want to see other people waste their time on this mud if they know they have a mind of their own, and won't respect being called liars or treated unfairly. Because you won't last long on here if you question unfair judgment. I decided to quit the game after being banned on all channels for defending myself against someone who got no punishment. It wouldn't even have been a big deal because we would have worked it out, but the imms won't let us, they are deeply involved in everything. On a last note: When I decided to quit, I started picking out my good equipment to give away to a clan member. This was taking a while. While I do this, I get a telepath from this imm saying 'Why don't you just remove everything and drop it on the ground so he can pick it up. That would be much quicker. :)' Mud gameplay: 10/10, can't even grade how imms treat the players low enough. What I write here is in no way the opinion of all other players on the game, and represents only my own experience with the mud. All the above observations are observations made by me and no one else. Shae

Shaeryn's review is a rather lengthy work of fiction and I feel her talent is wasted in this. I really hope she finds a mud where she fits in and can use her creativity in a more productive way. As co-owner of Project Bob, I can assure you that we will continue to work toward providing a fun game with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere (regardless of trolls or flaming). Come see for yourself. You won't be disappointed. :)
MudConnector.Com Review (Archived) by on Dec 7, 2007
I think it's fitting that the person who has caused all the grief makes the comment that truth is fiction, for the person has entirely based her life philosophy on the fiction that what she says and does is right in this world. Shae's review details the unfairness that led to her leaving, while still giving credit to the great gameplay that this mud offers. Many other players have voiced their discontent, as well. The very fact that one of the owners will not own up to the cause of discontent is disturbing. Covering up the issue will not make it go away.
MudConnector.Com Review (Archived) by on Dec 10, 2007
Shaeryn, my thanks to you for bringing this to my attention. It appears that Project Bob has deviated from my original intent. There are shocking rumors of suggestive socials being removed and a severe lack of profanity there. I can't imagine how these people justify this and how they could be so intolerant of your furthering of my cause. It saddens me greatly to think that a player who has been cussing openly and fighting on other muds for years could suddenly be so repressed. Put a semi-mean person amongst a group of very nice people and suddenly they are the ones in trouble. It's so unfair, they usually have someone worse to hide behind. How can a mud be so full of nice people and so lacking in jerks? It's just not right. After all these years of internet vulgarity where people like Shaeryn seem nice, I feel bad as new advanced code and game play, to be the one to make Shaeryn's rudeness stand out. My deep sympathy is with you Shaeryn. May you find a group of players that are meaner than you so that you, too, can feel like a nice person again. Sincerely, The Source Code

I had found this mud quite entertaining. However, sadly, some corruption has begun in its immortal staff. I was muted, forced to send whispers to players, and then when I went to report this immortal I was banned before I could.

I have been playing at Project Bob for around nine months now, and not only is it an excellent mud which is still being improved on all the time, but I have found the behavior of the Admins to be excellent at all times. I have never seen them to be anything but fair and impartial. I have no idea what led to Xukuth's issues, but I would be greatly surprised if there wasn't more to the story than meets the eye. Try Project Bob. Odd name, great Mud!
MudConnector.Com Review (Archived) by on Nov 10, 2007
Doubt there was more to this story. Something is happening to the imm staff. I've been reading other comments about the mud, and people talk about how eager the staff is to listen to players. This is not the case anymore, because from what i've seen, you're supposed to respect being called a liar, and if other players attack you for no reason, you get nochanned for defending yourself. Try to talk to an imm about it, and you will get a warning and the 'you are a guest here, when we say jump you say how high'. I don't say how high, I ask why, and hence aren't welcome on bob. I'm sorry but this guy makes a very valid point. The mud is going to self destruct if she continues like this.
MudConnector.Com Review (Archived) by on Nov 28, 2007
Project Bob, an odd name for an amazing MUD. I've been playing MUDs for over 10 years now and I can honestly say I've never seen one that can quite match up to Bob. With a few exceptions, most other MUDs fail to keep me interested over a long period of time. You get to the maximum level, remort (when possible) and repeat. Bob on the other hand has so many things for you to do, it's hard to get bored. I played Bob for about 2 years before becoming an Imm there and still play in addition to building, as do the other imms who are all very friendly. We generally have about 15 to 30 players logged on and at least 2 or 3 imms. All the players are very easy going and more than willing to lend a helping hand to new players (and old players who forget things). It is easy to be a little overwhelmed at first by all the features Bob has, but the truth of the matter is that you don't really need to know every aspect of the MUD in order to have fun and make a great character. I know it may seem like I'm rambling a bit, but there's so much to say about Bob! Character creation is vast, we are classless but have 'prepackaged' classes that will help new players get a feel for the game without having to go through the entire customization process right away. After creation, there is a non-stock MUD school that will introduce the basics of ROM MUDs and a few of the unique features Bob has to offer. The first 90 levels of play go fast and are more of an introduction than anything. The real game starts at level 90 when you begin gaining perklevels. Perks are used in place of training points to improve stats, but are also for increasing skills and other things as well. The EQ system is a lot like Diablo. There is base EQ that has random prefixes and suffixes attached to it which then can be further customized. You won't find all of the high-level players wielding the same weapons and wearing the same armor. I have a lot of fun searching for just the right piece of EQ to fit my character and trading with other players who might want what I've found. As far as quests go, we have the same randomly generated 'go find this' 'go kill him' quests as most other ROMs but we also have upward of 500 different tasks that will have you exploring areas, helping out NPCs and of course, killing. Along with that, there is a bounty system in place that gives the player a random set of mobs that he or she must kill. A dungeon generator provides a limitless amount of small areas filled with mobs that players can go through. Other than the tasks, the dungeons are my favorite. I love hacking through a room of mobs to get a treasure chest and making it all the way to the end to kill a big boss. While some of the stock rooms are still in place, many have had changes made to the mobs inhabiting them. We are always working on expanding the world and players can explore the vast wilderness that connects areas together, complete with random encounters. In my three years, I haven't even found my way through every area and it's nice not being frustrated by confusing mazes, dead-ends or worse, death traps. Players can always preform a remake on their characters if they find that they dislike the magics or other skill sets that they've chosen. With a remake, all of your progress is carried over, you don't lose any skill points, any perk points, gold, qp or your eq. It simply lets you completely reform the choices you've made for skills, spells and perks. I've found myself remaking my main character probably 6 times or so by now and I'm pretty happy with him, I've gotten him to fit my playing style well. I think I've gone on long enough, though I could probably write quite a bit more. I'll finish by saying that we have a comprehensive help system and a data system that lets you see the details of skills, spells, enchantments and more. In addition, we have a forum with plenty of help as well and there is a Project Bob wiki page that is coming along nicely. If you can't find help in any of those places, just ask on our question/answer channels, someone will be able to help you out. There are many things on Bob that I haven't went into in this review, but where would the fun be if I told you everything? :) So, stop by Bob, say hi and take a look around. I promise you won't regret it. I sure haven't.
MudConnector.Com Review (Archived) by on Aug 2, 2007
I have to preface this review by saying that it would never be possible to describe all of the features available to you on Project Bob in 10,000 characters, so I'm going to have to touch on the best points. First and foremost, this mud is consistently updated in accordance with player requests and comments. I complained about something for a few days and logged on to find it had been taken care of. This is very rare. The biggest draw to myself on Project Bob is the account system, which allows you to link an set of players together, all of them sharing certain account benefits, which are earned via a 'PerkPoint' system similar to the Perk system in the popular 'Fallout' series of PC games. This means that no matter how you are playing or what you feel like doing on that day, you are always building your characters up. The account system also grants a 100% (or more) experience bonus to your characters that are lower than the largest, which makes playing alternate characters a lot more fun. You've already struggled to gain your high level, why repeat that? The other strongpoint of Project Bob is the equipment system. It is quite similar to the PC game 'Diablo' in that all of the equipment that you pick up is randomized and automatically suited to your current player level. Each piece of equipment has a 'prefix' and 'suffix' enchant, meaning that the possibilities for customization are nearly endless. As you progress in the game, you will create your own equipment from base items to suit your character and play style. Finally, the Immortals that run this mud are eager to listen to and consider the things that they players have to say, and are even active players themselves! This responsiveness insures that any issues that may arise are handled quickly and without stress. On top of that, the Immortals have a very clear understanding of what it is to be a player on Bob, and this compassion for the players shows through in the ease of play and clear, concise instructions provided. Don't play Project Bob if you're married or have a job that you like, because you'll probably play so much that you'll lose both.

I have played on numerous MUDs since the 90's and Project Bob has been one of my favorite - it's kept me happily occupied for the last 3 years! :) Let me tell you how Project Bob measures up in the most important aspects of a MUD: ATMOSPHERE: Relaxed and fun! The pbase on Project Bob, which ranges from about 10-20, is a great group of people who are always willing engage in conversation. This often leads to some hilarious situations. For example: '21:00:45] Marehoff OOC: 'I am NOT giving up my rubber-chickenn hat'' '[10:02:21] Foxtail OOC: 'you leave my bosom out of this'' GAMEPLAY: Well, as you can see from the MUD description, there are TONS of things to do. Tired of hacking and slashing? Try testing the incredibly developed quest system, hunt for treasure, craft your equipment, or enter the arena! As a new player, you may feel overwhelmed...this brings me to the next important aspect! HELP RESOURCES/NEWBIE TREATMENT: First, the game has a very developed hfile system. Thanks to the diligent work of our IMMs, a helpfile exists for nearly every aspect of the game. Can't find what you're looking for? Ask over the Q/A channel. In all my years of playing, I have never seen a respectfully asked question go unanswered :) Too shy to ask globally? Check out our WIKIpedia page, or better yet, 'petition' one our Tutors! IMMSTAFF: Ah...the most important, and potentially most disastrous, part of a MUD. Matrim, the head coder, has steered this MUD true for years with one overriding motto: 'The Player's enjoyment of the MUD comes first.' That means no death traps, no impossibly obscure quests, and the ability to 'remake' you character (while retaining all its EXP/EQ) at any time. Along with Matrim, the other Immortals are constantly working to improve the MUD - we recently had a Memorial Day Quest :) Most of the Immortals are usually visible and are always willing to chat and answer questions. All of them have mortal alts too, and can often be seen enjoying the MUD along with the regular players. Despite their relaxed demeanor, the Immortals will not tolerate any breaking of the Rules. You can be assured as a player that your experience on Project Bob will not be ruined by excessively rude or immature behavior from other players:)

I have been playing this MUD for a VERY long time and I am still a newbie, lol... I am only a teenager and this game has me hooked. I have tried other MUDs after this one, i didn't like any of them and always came back to Project Bob. The depth of the character customization is AMAZING! Matrim, the Owner of Project Bob, is very involved with players, he is very patient and helpful.. No matter who you are try this MUD, you won't be disappointed.

Wow. Because of this review, I went on Project Bob and tried it out... amazing. It's not like other MUDs at all. There's a lot of customization, the skill and 'perk' system is very interesting. It has a lot of great features that make many of the things I've been frustrated with on MUDS much easier, and even though it's based in the ever-popular Midgaard, the rest of the world is very different and interesting. There is a lot of stuff to learn and take in. This is like no MUD I've played before, and a lot of things are much more complicated. Because of this, I probably wouldn't recommend it to new MUDers... but if you can handle it, go ahead. :)

I joined ProjectBob a few days ago because of excellent Mudconnector reviews by Gryzz, Ariana, and Jarred. They tell the truth, so I hope you will read them. I'm adding my own first impressions as a newbie Bober. PB breaks a lot of rules and conventions. For instance, there is the rule that players must die, and their deaths must be severe punishments. Although there is death on PB, it's not inflicted as though the game gloats about tricking the player. You die, pick yourself up, and return to the fray without having to dig yourself out of an xp hole. Another instance is the 'perk' system, which replaces long periods of bored wandering between levels by regular reinforcement in the form of perk points that can be used to enhance your character. If you decide later that the enhancement isn't quite right, you can undo perks and unlearn practices, tinkering with new ideas. Points can be used to learn 'tech' attacks between the normal cycles of player-versus-mob combat, giving the player a heightened sense of control. There is code for player-versus-player combat (which I haven't tried yet), but PB isn't built around encouraging bloodlust between players. There is also code for roleplaying. I've only tried it once, taking a thoroughly pleasant tour of another player's home as we elevated our speech to match the medieval theme -- an enjoyable conversation for which we each earned rp points. You can buy homes as this player had done, though I'm still saving up gold for my own purchase. There are clans that foster a degree of intra-clan solidarity and inter-clan competition, but PB doesn't encourage social powerlust, as far as I can tell. It's a remarkably friendly and welcoming community. The forums complement the MUD itself. For instance, Ariana sent out a call for socials, and my suggestion (see below) was accepted and implemented overnight; I've been using it excessively ever since. As Jarred mentioned, Matrim is the sole owner/coder. He's passionate about communicating with players as well as getting the code right. His news items give you a sense of participating in an organically evolving world, and the 'lessons' keep you from getting lost. All of this in articulate English! He has decided to make the gameplay transparent. The player sees how the code is operating in the world. You will have to play the game to appreciate this, but for example you see room numbers, and during combat you see points being deducted from xp. Yet another rule broken. PB is not the place for people who are looking for a simulation of real-world anger and domination, but it may be for you if you enjoy tinkering with a friendly, stylish, complex and player-malleable environment. wOrd.

Okay, so I first came across Project Bob after searching mudconnector endlessly for a mud that had a feature where clans could take over and govern areas within the mud. At first, I found a couple of muds that said they had this feature, but really didn't. I kept passing over Project Bob for the petty reason of not liking the name. Finally I tried it out and... wow. If ROM 2.4 is dungeons and dragons, then this mud is a console rp minus the graphics. Project Bob had this feature and a whole lot more. Here are some of the features that will keep me hooked for a long time: Diablo-style eq: There are common, rare, elite, and epic type equipment drops that are random and based on level. This replaces getting the vorpal sword, bat rings, and other tired eq from stock- based ROMs. You will also find an eq customization system that rivals the Playstation 2 strategy rpg Disgaea in depth and fun. Quest-centric focus: On most muds, quests follow a pattern of 'find the questmaster, kill a mob, get quest points, wait out a 30 minute time, rinse and repeat.' Here, there are hundreds of quests that give life to areas while still adding to questpoint totals. These are patterned after a Dragon Warrior style non-linear plot rather than mindless questing. Game Balance: After a short time, I heroed at level 90 and figured 'okay, this is a rot-style pk mud.' Not so fast. Levels 1- 90 are just an introduction to the mud, while 90 and beyond are the real leveling component. Level 90 just allows for a player to quickly get to survive more areas of the mud to allow a player to choose better how they want to level. There is no more killing hundreds of beastly fidos just to get to level 10. Class customization: No one picks the default package for a class on a stock ROM, but instead chooses the custom option. Project Bob takes this to a whole new level without being too esoteric. Don't get me wrong, there are not thousands of useful skills, but instead there is a real customization process with the skills they do have. Focus on fun: Project Bob has gotten rid of the features that vex most players while still keeping a challenging and fun atmosphere. You will get what I mean when you realize that thirst and hunger are gone, which means you won't be stuck in a far away area with no stamina and have to stop levelling just to get a drink from the fountain in Midgaard. I am not an imm, and I have no idea how to code despite my ten years of mudding off and on. This is just my opinion of this mud. Most of the time, you read a review only to log on to a mud and find a stock mud with a few new broken features and some lame areas that are made by sadistic Dungeon Master-style imms to punish players. If this is the case, take some karmic relief and try out Project Bob. Project Bob is in late Beta phase and set to release at Christmas, but it is so polished now that it is better to play than muds that have been established for years.

I have been mudding since the 90's and this is one of the most entertaining and unique MUDs I’ve ever played. The first thing you will notice upon creation is just how DIFFERENT this MUD is. (I know, you've heard that hundreds of times before - but this time it's true!) PB offers a classless system with countless combinations of skills and spells to choose from. If you're the type of players who loves to tweak your character and equipment to perfection - this is the MUD for you! As you progress in PB you will undoubtedly have questions. Your pleas for assistance will not fall on deaf ears, as nearly all the players are willing to lend a hand or give advice. In terms of general atmosphere, you will find the atmosphere on PB can range from laid-back to downright silly at times:) Additionally, the people who run the MUD are awesome! Matrim is the Head Coder/Builder of the MUD (you might hear this MUD referred to as MATmud) and is just about the coolest IMP ever. Matrim and his staff somehow manage to churn out new features and tweak old ones, while at the same time taking the time to personally help players with their questions. Okay, now for some things players may not like (though I can assure you, there aren't many). First off, this MUD has a pretty steep learning curve. Players and IMMs can only help you so much - YOU must have the initiative and intelligence to learn. The information is all out there in the form of help files and training quests, but it's up to you to take the time to read and do them. Don't give up, this complexity translates into rich gameplay that you will enjoy for countless hours. Second, because Matrim and Staff are always tinkering with the code, crashes happen at least once a week. However, Matrim is always there to restart the MUD, with no damage to players and their belongings. In my 2+ years of MUDding on PB, I have never seen the MUD down for longer than 3 hours. Well, that's about it. We are a totally unique and highly complex MUD with a friendly pbase and hardworking staff. I could go on and on about all the neat features that keep me coming back, such as the diablo style random equipment, pets, arena, endless levels etc., but why don't you come and see for yourself! The MUD is located at: projectbob.game-host.org:4000 See you there!

If you try only one mud, try this one. I've tried a lot of different muds, and Project Bob is, by far, my favorite. There is something for everyone here. You may choose to play a traditional class, or customize your character to be exactly what you would like it to be. Either way, leveling isn't the same old 'max your character out and get bored' system like everywhere else. The perk system allows you to gain a nearly unlimited amount of levels. For those of you who like to explore, there is a vast world, with new areas being added frequently. The random equipment system is wonderful, and there are many types of quests. Project Bob maintains a community atmosphere, a community which is helpful, fun, and a joy to play with. There is so much to be said about this mud, it’s impossible to cover it all here. The bottom line is... give Project Bob a try. You won't be disappointed. :)

For someone like me who only played a handfull of stock muds this one seemed a little overwhelming at first. To keep it Newbie friendly Midgaard is pretty stock. But after that its not your standard mud. From the get go there are many races to choose from, and with all the custominzing you can do to your character the posibilites are endless. Matrim and Logain are the main coders and they are constantly working on imporving the mud. What I really like about Project Bob is the imms actualy care about the players and listen to their ideas on making the mud better. There are many features to Project Bob that make it so unique, like being able to customize you eq to better match your character to personal quests and missions. And the players there are extremly helpfull and friendly, me included. If you decide to stop by look for me ill be there as Jenna

Whether you're an old-school mudder or a MMORPG lover, a role-playing fanatic or a hack-and-slash maniac, you'll be able to find a place on Project Bob. I only started playing Bob last month, but already I'm hooked. I came over from the now-gone Rivers of MUD and expected to only use this MUD to chat with a few friends from there... I must admit that at the start, I was a little intimidated by the depth of character creation. Those fears soon subsided as the various immortals (mainly Matrim and Kaysa) carefully directed me through the process. The neatest thing about the whole character building process is being able to UNDO the things you screw up. You can also remake your character, undo the bonuses you add to your stats (these are called perks)... Comparing equipment that you gain is very simple, as you can look at the stats without gaining any 'identify' spells... Almost every change made to the basic ROM system has made gameplay more interesting, more exciting, and a lot less troublesome. I especially like being able to learn spells by reading spellbooks -- it makes a lot more sense than gaining them through a guildmaster, and it's simple, quick and useful. Overall, your character is entirely unique from everyone else's, and the best thing about the game is that once you get started, you really don't need a lot of help from other players. The community is close and comfortable, the rules are mainly a matter of courtesy and common sense, and the imms are willing to listen and even implement reasonable ideas. Any suggestions that you might come up with to improve gameplay, game activities, role-playing or any other aspect of the game will be respected. Although not everything goes in, you won't get a cold shoulder from the imms of Bob, and your ideas won't be rejected as stupid or moronic. Give it a try, really!

Alright, I was a little leery when you get a Midgaard map as part of your newbie set-up. Ok, I thought, another Midgaard clone, same as hundreds of other muds, but boy was I wrong! The admins may use the Midgaard template, but they have sure made it different. First, classes, well...there are classes in the form of templates, or you can go custom. I chose a warlock template, which includes 3 categories of spell types, like Fire magic, Dark magic, & general. You get staff & martial arts for melee combat options. It is then up to you to distribute skill points (like practices) & perk points (sort of like trains, but more involved) to advance your abilities. This lets you really customize what you're character can do. There will truly be no two characters alike as there are so many choices to make with how you spend your perk points. Will you decide to increase your strength, your staff fighting skill, or your ability in one of the magic systems. The admins have really worked to make this an original mud. Yes, it has some of the same Midgaard layout - Moria is there, but it's been tweaked so you have to be 90th level to survive. I found out the hard way, but death has no penalty, you arrive back at recall with all your stuff, & no exp loss, just a time penalty to recover. One of the really cool & unusual elements is the equipment, mobs drop random eq, ala Diablo, so you can get some good stuff. Then, there are a number of ways to tweak the equipment. As part of your gear, you are given a smelter & a forge. Say you get a sword that is labeled (Iron), You have the option of using it as is, or using "examine" on the sword to see what it would cost in gold & materials to upgrade it at the weapon shop. It may say it will require 5 units of metal & 5000 gold to upgrade it one level. The reason you have the smelter, is when you get stuff made of a material like iron, you can feed it to the smelter, & get the raw iron ore that you would then give to the weaponsmaster to upgrade the weapon. You can also use the forge to randomly get an item that is forged out other items. Say you have collected 3 swords, 2 maces & a dagger. You can load the stuff into the forge, & get one weapon that will be better than what was put in, but what kind & how much better would be randomly generated. Now this Mud is pretty much hack & slash, maybe there will be RP, I only have played a little bit, but it's fun all the same, & you will level fast. It's in beta, so I would imagine there will be changes, but it's pretty tweaked right now. coders... Read More

Been playing this for a short time only, but all i can say is HOLY MOTHER! It's a little rough around the edges, and could use some sprucing up in some parts, but HELL if it aint in depth! It's got tons of skills with tons of subskills and tons of requirements. Honestly, I only went to even look at it cause I thought it would be a joke. Not saying that it will be my primary mud of play on a daily basis, but it is one heck of a place to go in you like lots of customization and specialization. I would certainly rate this place a 8 outta 10.

As both an experienced mortal as well as admin of several muds, I can say I've seen a good bit. I've seen several muds rise and fall. In this mud, the new and deeper character system will have you hooked. The system which has been entirely done from scratch by the sole Coder/Owner, Matrim, is awesome. It allows for infinite customization. It is nearly impossible to have 2 characters be the exact same. The random eq generator keeps everyone on their toes as far as eq goes. The number of fun-based features is massive and only growing on a daily basis. You can fish, do some minihhng, combine elements to make your own equipment, or perform one of many mob-assigned quests to earn gold, reputation points, and Quest Points. The Staff is a group of friendly Mudders whose sole purpose is to ensure that all players enjoy their stay. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newbie looking to get your feet wet, this is the place to dive in! Stop by, and you won't be disappointed. Jarred, The Help Files Admin
