DO NOT pick the PK option unless you like redoing a lot of things again. The game is full of people who have played for years and apparently have low level twinks. I only got a 'Watch out this guy is coming for you message' It wasn't even a fight. This guy literally just logged on to his low level character tracked me down while shopping wiped the floor with me and took things i either don't know where to get again or had to spend quest points to buy. It was very discouraging in the least. I had a hard enough time finding the things I did just to stay strong enough to keep leveling. Its a good game just don't plan on picking the PK option unless you already have an encyclopedic knowledge of this game. It will ruin it for you.
I've played Ansalon on and off for almost 20 years at this point. It's been a long time since I played regularly (maybe 5 years or so), but in the past few months I've come back to it and am just having a blast. The player base ebbs and flows, but I've seen lots of familiar faces since I've come back (and even more new ones). The staff has always been great and the players that have stuck around (or are coming around for the first time) are great people. The world itself is just awesome. I've seen it grow from stock ROM areas to interesting original content with tons of really fun code tweaks. There's obviously a learning curve - but everyone is helpful enough that this curve gets eliminated pretty quickly. I really can't say how happy I am to be back and to see that RP is happening, the world continues to change, PK is generally getting back up with some pretty great RP (and is optional for anyone concerned), and that the things I love about the game have not only continued but improved. I also want to just thank everyone who makes it possible (and I know you're not doing it alone Dave - but thanks for keeping everything alive).
My very first online game was with AnsalonMUD way back in late 1997. As a huge fan of DragonLance, I was very picky, I want an online game that is as close as possible to the world of DL. AnsalonMUD filled that perfectly. Friendly and helpful people. Role-playing is excellent. After being gone for a decade and a half, the atmosphere not only stayed the same, it's better. The community especially, more role-playing, healthy at that, bigger, and the overall experience is, as always, memorable.
This appears to be a game that is battling against a player recession, which is unfortunate, considering the amount of effort put forth by the developers, that is evident in the game environment. I found Ansalon to be quite engaging, however the lack of an active playerbase actually dulled this experience. Recently, I attempted to access the game website, to submit a survey that was suggested in-game, however this resulted in a 404 error. There is little more I can say about this game, since to date I haven't been able to contact an immortal or 'player helper' representative for assistance.
I came to Ansalon on the recommendation of a friend. Her recommendation was correct; it WAS a fun place, but the mud is full of jerks who really have little to do except whine and complain about the fact that the mud has both Pk players and NOPK players. I won't return to this place as the OOC conversation about the PK/NOPK rift is completely and totally out of control, even though I was told that the rift was stopped. (Apparently not). Thanks Mieren for inviting me to play, but I'll take my gaming elsewhere.
Well, to start off. Ansalon has one of the friendliest Immortal staff and player bases I have ever experienced in a mud. From the get go, I was warmly welcomed and helped after a LONG hiatus from the mud. The people playing within are extremely helpful in Equipment runs and Roleplaying suggestions. The maps made for the mud are above all, one of the most helpful bases for moving throughout the mud. Even when you're in a gray area, which are few, you can easily be helped by either an immortal or Player. The item base in the game is BROAD, and wickedly fun to use, find, trade, and quest for. The quests are varied and fun, and the classes, races, and roleplay are unique in each and every way. Thank you, Zivilyn and Other Imps, Immortal, Veterans, and players whom have given so much to make a truly Wonderful Mud. :)
Money change! Ansalon now has a five (5) coin monetary system!!! This will allow for more accurate costs on items, as well as a lighter load to carry. Platinum = pp = The rarest metal coin on Ansalon Steel = st Silver = sp Gold = gp Copper = cp 1 pp = 100 st = 10,000 sp = 1,000,000 gp = 100,000,000 cp 1 st = 100 sp = 10,000 gp = 1,000,000 cp 1 sp = 100 gp = 10,000 cp 1 gp = 100 cp IE. A diamond that was worth 11,000 gp (110 st), is now 11,000 cp (110 gp) A star diamond was worth 1,100,000 gp (11,000 st), now worth 1 st, 10 sp (1.1 st) It's not a change of worth or cost, simply the denomination of the coins. The old 'gold and steel' is now 'copper and gold' but we have 3 more coins of incremental values of 100. IE 1 Copper of the new money is worth 1 of todays gold. 1 Gold of the new money is worth 1 of todays steel. 1 Silver of the new money, is worth 100 of todays steel. 1 Steel of the new money, is worth 10,000 of todays steel. 1 Platinum of the new money, is worth 1 MILLION of todays steel. So what this ends up doing you ask? A loaf of bread for 4 copper, a sword for 6 gold (or 600 copper), a long range crossbow might be 1 silver 2 gold (102 gold, or 10,200 copper). 2 coins was so 90's ;D (Ps. I realize that 'in the books' DL has different values, but those values did not translate into a very easily played online game, so each became an increment of 100.)
There are some good things about this MUD. Reasonable playerbase, some nice modifications, sensible economy. The thing that really put me off it, however, is its approach to dying. Basically as soon as you set foot outside your home city or do any exploring in general, high-level aggressive mobiles and 'death rooms' abound. This wouldn't be a big problem if the MUD approach to death wasn't 'your corpse and all your belongings stay in the room unless you can get back there equipmentless and not die, or have a ridiculous amount of money to pay for your corpse to be magically returned.' Your corpse will also decay in 15 minutes real-time, which is a shorter length of time than most of the MUDs I've played on. To be fair, if there's an imm around they might return your corpse for you, but there won't always be, and they don't have to, by any means. It's a shame, really. It's a good MUD apart from this glaring problem, and if it weren't for this 'feature' I'd have no problem recommending to anyone. As it stands, after the third complete-eq-loss-with-no- chance-of-retrieval due to no-warning 'sudden death' fun I couldn't keep playing. It was just too disheartening.
(Belated post) Fishing is now in! Version 1.1 courtesy of Sargonnas and Zivilyn. The Fishing Items: Fishing ROD - these can be of different lengths and strengths. BAIT - based on size and how desirable the bait is, experiment. LINE - line size is key. Big is strong, but fish can see it easier. You can have line break off, and still have line, just less of it. You will need new hooks, bait, sinker... SINKER - big you can make go lower, small you can raise... Sinkers are needed only to change depth. HOOK - size and strength, big scares little fish, little won't catch big fish. How to fish: fish - If you are holding an equipped rod, you can fish. ie - Fish north, you will cast your line north. FISH lower - This will attempt to lower depth of your bait FISH raise - This attempts to raise depth of your bait. FISH reel - This is the command that attempts to reel in line. You'll want to reel until you lose or land the fish... But, you have to be mindful of the direction the fish is going, if it's going nuts, let it play a bit, then reel. FISH REEL Left/Right/back - Reel with or against the fish... How to: Get set up: Buy rod, line, hook, sinker, and some of your favorite bait. PUT line rod, put hook rod, put sinker rod, put bait rod... wear rod. .. Then... Fish! Get the fish: Nibbles, watch... wait. Dead line, or bite, FISH REEL!!! Keep reeling! Once you land it, 'get fish rod' to remove it. That's it! The fish are sellable, and soon fillets, cooking, fish house anyone? So far we have 80 fish species from Sturgeon to Salmon, flounder to bluegill, bass to muskies. There are nearly 20 types of fishing holes, from reefs to docks, surf to lagoons, rivers oceans... Fishing was originally written by Sargonnas for his Plains of Nomaia project. This version re-written by both Sargonnas and Zivilyn (um me ;p) to give a much greater control and reponse, also the sub-sector types, gazillions of fish.. It's not 'Bass Masters MUD' but it's sure a blast to go fishing Biggrin . The better fish are worth a mint as well. Version 1.2 coming soon (120+ fish species). Its rumored that a fishmarket buys the fish, other shops may as well.

Ansalon is a fabulous mud. I found that as a newbie I was helped out tremendously and also more importantly embraced in a roleplay almost immediately upon logging on. Its not got a huge playerbase, but the folks that are there roleplay constantly and do go out of their way to help new players start. The website as well is absolutely phenominal. Check out its newbie guide. Its everything a new person needs to get started. I know I suggested some of its content because of my experiences. New things are welcome too. Every idea I've brought to this mud has been discussed and ultimately accepted and put into play. I'd highly recommend it to anyone, new or old.
Ansalon is a great mud, Dragonlance with tons of things to do, a enormous world, stock feel but WAY more you can do. The new fishing kicks tail!
Holy Cow! If it wasn't for backups... well for one, this mud wouldn't be here after the Cataclysm. But also, all the stories from 1999 through present are now online!!!! The system is automated now so that all notes written to 'all' will now show up under that author's page (or create a page if they don't have one). Hours of reading... heck it's days of reading. Get those sweats on, don't shower or shave, get a good blanket, a cup a' joe, and I'll see you next Tuesday.
I realize that the email password and name acceptance may seem silly and a waste of time. But Ansalon is one of those muds that tries not to have 'DarkDeath' and 'UberMage' names for characters. This requires a name approval system, at this time it is manual by the imm staff, perhaps sometime I'll write one that is automated with a list of words to compare to, but player wants shove that to the end of a long 'todo' list. As for the email that is sent out, it's instantaneous, the only thing that slows it down is mail servers with long queue's (this being on the receiving end). Or an occasional slow time from the server itself. Being hosted on Wolfpaw tends to mean the slow times are near non-existant. Again, I'm sorry if you found it rediculous that we have to approve names. But with all of the SirMixalot and RaistlinsGod's out there... it's required. If you have the patience to wait a few seconds for the email, take a look and see. I believe you'll find it's one of the better creation emails out there. Very informative based off of your character, it will really get you started. Though if waiting a few minutes is so much of a hassle that you find you must look elsewhere, happy journeys and I hope you find the MUD you're seeking.
It would be great to try this mud out, however the admins have implemented a ridiculous 'character creation' process that first involves waiting for up to 5 minutes for name approval. After going through that wait, you go through a normal character creation at the end of which you enter an e-mail address. You are then promptly disconnected with a message about how you need to wait for up to another 30 minutes for an e-mail to be sent to you with an updated password you can log in with to change back to a password you can remember. Ridiculous.
New Skill (useable trained and untrained) MOONPHASE "MOON PHASE" Moon phase is a skill that some classes can get which helps you to track the phases of the moons. Anyone can use the skill untrained, but some classes can actually train in the skill and become adept at knowing the cycles of the moons wherever they may be, inside, outside, day or night. New Commands for movement:(simply an assistance to newbies) WALK WALKING MOVEMENT MOVE To move about the MUD you may simple type any cardinal direction (north/south/east/west, and up/down). You may also "move north" (move ) or "walk ". Whichever way is most comfortable to you. MOVE (or WALK) can also allow you to automatically enter portals and doors if you should use the name of it. For example, move gate will move you through the gate. It will do so from any non-beat-to-crap position ;p. This is an attempt to make things a little more easy, and obvious to new players. New FAR Reaching Macro command :USE!!! USE USING Using items in the mud just got a whole lot simpler. USE: Can now be the command for quaff, drink, unlock, zap, brandish, wear, hold, recite, rest, eat, sharpen... get the drift? IE: USE scroll dog USE key north, USE key chest, USE potion, USE sword, USE wand, USE wand goblin, USE staff dog USE pillow, USE apple... I do believe you've gotten what we're saying. You can USE any item type now, without having to figure out some strange command word. The use command interprets what the item is you're trying to use, then uses it in the correct way if it HAS a use. Pretty much not brain surgery, but it will sure help to use (snicker) one command with so many uses (I know, all puns in ten did ;p). Zivilyn/Skol.
Tried this MUD as I thought it was RP-enforced. Probably is- problem being that I didn't live long enough to figure it out. Newbie school alright- very standard, leading up to an 'Arena' where you fight bigger an' better mobs, but still H&S... then I get out in the world and, with little or no explaination of death, I get slaughtered when walking into a shack in a town. For that, I give it low ranks for true 'newbie friendliness', as I reckon getting slotted when straight out of newbie school is a bit harsh. No newbie channel- you have to make do with the OOC channel. And while the other players seem helpful, they argue on the channel about which one of them is right in their advice, and that's a bit off-putting, to say the very least. In summary? Okay for newbs willing to trawl through the game without much guidance. Anyone else? No, don't waste your time.
Wow! This mud is astonishing. I have never had such a positive roleplay experience as I have had with Ansalon, outside of a true mush environment. The immortal staff is one of the best all around. The players are very friendly and have gone out of their way to help me as a newbie. And best of all, this mud is all dragonlance all the time. And they run real wars! I pray and my God answers me. What absolute amazing coding as well. This is not just a stock rom. Its very heavily modified and the coder puts in new stuff just as soon as you ask for it. Thanks Ansalon! Your amazing.
I have been a fan of the Dragonlance series for quite some time now and of course with my love of the books I was drawn to the MUDs that revolved around them. Having been with Ansalon since 2001 I can safely say that this is the most well-rounded and open for new ideas kind of MUD. The player base does it's part to try and improve the life and entertainment value of the experience but there is always the need for new ideas and new people. You can't have a good life without some change, right? That's why Ansalon is an enjoyable and worth while MUD to play on. New ideas and revisions on old ones have always helped to improve the quality of Ansalon. What's a review without putting in a good comment or two for myself? Oldbies remember me from the mud for many strange things, including being part of a war that was played out in which I had a horde of bumble-bees and squirrels do some major damage on the offending parties of the war (evil and good since I was neutral and thoroughly bored). That's just why I love Ansalon! You can be strange and do strange things to make the experience better while making everyone else grin and chuckle sometimes. A smile is worth more than a thousand compliments. Ansalon never fails to put a smile on my face even when the player base is down or things are looking grim. Ansalon is the cure for the common cold and one of the numerous things to happen in my life to make me smile day in and day out. Give her a try! *pats Ansalon on the back*
I've been mudding at Ansalon for a really long time, and no matter how often I take a 'break' from it, I'll always end up coming back. For the fun code, for the people. There's only so many photo-realistic 3d games you can play before you get bored. Ansalon is one of the most replayable games I've ever tried. As a mud, it has a strong sense of community and thats a large reason why I keep coming back; to see my old friends and do a little RP. There are very few times where you will be the only one logged on, unless its at say 5 am: even then you will be one of two or three people. There are always immortals on you can bug...err ask for help. Anyway, I would recommend this mud to anyone who loves Dragonlance or just fantasy rp in general.
Just a little note: In case you haven't noticed, Ansalon has moved! Our new location is: ansalonmud.org 8679 http://www.ansalonmud.org Come on by!
Hey there traveller, Here's a little insight into things that are unique on Ansalon. Ansalon has: A unique system of MERCHANT SHIPS which can transport you to different port cities for no charge, all it takes is some time. Based upon the distance between ports. MORE GORE!!!! Body parts galore! With over 3 times the body parts of stock ROM, you'll see bits and pieces flying all over, and they tend to ooze, bleed, gush and slip about. Eat a heart, it's a kick. PRETITLES. So you want to be Lord MacFie, or perhaps The Filcher Grumash. No longer is it just first names and a title, let's get some of that roleplay going. HOME COUPONS. Eat one, you go home, whew, that Lava was about to bust my heiney, thank Reorx for that home coupon. SETABLE RECALL POINTS. Hey, for some reason, I don't like _always_ appearing in the Temple of Takhisis, how about moving mine to my home in the outskirts of Neraka? Sure thing. MORE GORE 2!! Hey, I always wanted to whip someone with that rat tail, or stab them with the tooth of that basilisk...Now you can! Some body parts are weapons! A centralized MAP system. No more buying outdated maps from the guy in Sanction, just because he's _slow_. Now maps are all made by Harol, our friendly cartographer, and then delivered to our map shops around the world. Good thing too, I heard Solace got a makeover. BUTCHERS!! With all those body parts, someone should cook them up so we can eat them later. Someone shall. SNEAK AND HIDE. How about something a little more role play? You got it, now your character will slide behind tree trunks, hide behind a rock, or dive into a pile of sand. And wait till you decide to come out. PETS SUCK. Not anymore pal. Pets now can be fitted with the finest equipment you can buy, assuming they have arms and legs and half a brain. And hey, let's be able to feed them potions and pills! GNOMETALK SUCKS! I can't make one talk slow enough to not make him more annoying than a kender! Well folks, slow speak is now in, slow it down there Glursockabillitillithurtsthentakehisinventionandcallitmyown... MONEY. Newbies now have money, food, all sorts of things. No more starving while trying to find out where the dang food court is, or scrounging for 2 steel to buy a loaf of bread. BANK ALL. Weren't you tired of having to count out your money to deposit? Me too. Bank all does all at once. SPELL FLAVOR! Spells now do some great role play actions, like tossing powder, a shrunken head, I always found it boring that you just said a funky word, didn't you? So wave that burning brand and flameshield someone. AUCTION. Auctions are back, now you can auction within the auction houses, and safely transfer items at no risk to your own skin, money too for that matter. TRUE FAITH. my...

I have been a player and Immortal on Ansalon for a few years now. I have seen all manner of situations, both good and bad. Based on what I have experienced, Ansalon is without a doubt one of the best MUDs out there. The Immortal Staff is helpful, tolerant, and works very hard to make this MUD an enjoying place for all. Yes, I am an Immortal so that all may sound biased, but from a player perspective, I first signed on to Ansalon after trying out several other MUDs. My interest was instantly peaked by a Roleplay that was ran over the IC (In-Character) channel. I became hooked and became friendly with many players. I also found that the Immortal Staff was kind and actually made up of real people. Imagine that, people behind the code just like me. After some time went by I was asked to join the Staff and have been a part of it ever since and have even made some real-life friends from it all. In regards to a couple of the previous reviews, sure, we have our problem players who don't always see eye to eye with Immortals, and vice versa. However that is far from the norm and is something that is handled as respectfully as possible. In the end though, Ansalon is serving above and beyond by bringing in new players as well as bringing back old ones to take part in the enjoyment that both Players and Immortals create for one another. So, if you are looking for a place that is not only a creative and imaginative environment, but also has a great playerbase and IMMstaff, I recommend stopping by and checking things out. You will most suredly get hooked.
-=|Ansalon|=- Having been involved in Ansalon and its previous incarnations for well over thirteen years, one might say I've pretty much seen it all. I started muding well back in the days of Aldara and Armegedon, and well before the world wide web was even a fledgling network of colleges, my lifetime of gaming has spanned the rise and fall of text based games. And as far as text based games go, Ansalon is hands down one of the best. Ansalon has a full time professional coder, so our code is extensive, more often than not bug-free, and details orientated. Ansalon loves details. Its its best part, I think. The staff and players put their heads together to get as close to reality gamewise they can get, without loosing the fantasy roleplaying aspect of it. And best of all, people roleplay. Sure, they hack and slash each other as well. But remember, Ansalon has a no-pk aspect so anyone can safely play without being afraid of others spoiling their fun. I'd also like to address the statements in earlier reviews as well. In terms of IMMS getting involved in roleplay, its been my experience that they do so only at players requests. And when players request it, they generally go all out to provide support characters, places, people, and mobs to get the story out there. Ansalon is blessed with a playerbase thats vividly imaginative and not afraid to push the envelopes with their stories. In terms of everyones complaints about bans... I'd like to address that as well. On many other muds, cheating is rampant. Oftentimes imms on other places have souped up characters, or give themselves wicked powerful eq and think for some reason this is fun. On ansalon, this does not happen. There are rules set in place to prevent mort/imm interaction... alt revealing, and cheating...of all sorts. The rules are not stifling, but are set in place so that everyone has an equal playing field when they log on. No one has ever been banned (And I have this on good authority... my own) for no reason. The only way a person gets banned on Ansalon is if they or their ISP group cheat or cause huge disruptive problems.. Both Nightwalker and Snefru claim bans for no reason is a problem. However, both of them know firsthand that the rules are enforced and cheating is responded too with bans. Go figure. On to the newbie issue. Often times its hard to tell whos a truely new character and whos just making a newbie alt. From my own observations and actions, I know first hand that those who struggle with commands or finding their way around (especially those from strange ISPs) are given literally hours of help by all sorts of people. I've seen some of our older players sit for hours on their characters patiently describing basic ROM commands. Each and every one of these folks deserves a hug. My advice if you to...

I have seen all sides of Ansalon, and most sides of it I completely love. From playing, role playing, building, imming, coding, the place is a joy for a DragonLance fan. I'll address Snefru and Nightwalkers reviews here. First off, I do think that the mud welcomes new players, I think it does frown upon players who seem to come in for the sole purpose of causing trouble, but what mud doesn't? I've played on many muds, from fantasy to modern, and I find that on all of them, there are people willing to help a 'newbie' and those that aren't. I think this comes down to human nature, not a reflection of a MUD itself. From what I've seen as a player, Ansalon is one of the more helpful muds out there. As for the comments on the 'Game owner', there is no single game owner. But yes, Snefru and his group of friends were site banned due to increasing problems with the playerbase on a whole. This included imm-alt revealing, among other things. (On Ansalon we keep immortal's mortal players secret, for obvious reasons, and it's a banning offense to alt-reveal ANY player.). I have seen where the role play has been heavily immortal influenced, at times to the extreme, but I think that isn't necessarily a bad thing. As far as role play going the direction an immortal wants, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I think it's wether or not it's well planned out, or a knock-off of some story/book/movie, that is a deciding factor in wether or not it becomes 'frowned upon'. (Ie, non-original to the point of plageurism, or completely against the DragonLance vein of acting for a group of known people). As far as immortal cheating, whenever it is spotted, that person loses their immortal character, and other characters, and gets a nice site-ban. We do try to compensate people who are victims of any type of cheating. Overall, I've found Ansalon a great place to play, build, imm, code etc. Basically the world is what we make it, and through extensive mobile/object/room programming, heavy building with an eye for detail, and a great overall immortal staff, I feel we've brought a real life to DragonLance mudders. I realize that not everyone can get along, but It's always been my goal to get that sort of utopia where we can, even to the point of letting the past go. I've personally removed almost all site-bans (long before reading the previous reviews) in an effort to put forth the olive branch to old-time problem players. I realize that people grow and learn, and I want them all to have a home on Ansalon. I hope you find Ansalon to be an enjoyable place to live in the DragonLance world. Stumpy McWood, aka Zivilyn.
This is a overall good mud, good clans, weapons, and people. It dose follow closely to the dragonlance theme for fans of the series. The overall problem I have seen is the imm staff of Ansalon, They incourage roleplay, but some of the staff tries to control every aspect of what you do, if it does not please them your rp is cut short. Theres heavy site banning, alot of players I have talked to have been banned for little or no reason by the muds owner. My suggestion for people who would like to play on Ansalon is: This mud is heavy hack and slash, so know how to Player Kill. Tread lightly. Know that all the Imms are not bad and some are truly there to help you. Enjoy Roleplaying.
Although Ansalon is in fact a well-developed MUD, with amazing code, well-built areas and good class balance, there is one aspect of it that might, and has, spoiled the playing satisfaction of it - imms. Ansalon is a mud where many players have been playing for well over two years. Although at first this may seem as a plus, there are reasons why it is not. The MUD does not welcome new players. If you log and expect help, you might be a long time waiting. Still, there are those who do help newbies, but the problem continues further. When the player has been acquainted with the rules of the MUD, how to play and has set the foundations for his RP, possibly developed it a bit, the world comes crashing down in many forms. The Game owner has been known to site ban many players, myself included. The reasons for this might be legitamate, and are no cause for complain. It becomes apparent that the particuar immortal mentioned has other reasons. Simply states as follows: If the RP doesnt go along the lines envisioned by that immortal, you will be frowned upon. Also, one is expected to "understand" certain taboos and rules that are not mentioned in any of the MUD rule or help files. Immortal cheating has occurred frequently, especially in cases of mortal alternate characters (alts). All in all, I would recommend the MUD to anyone who prefers a generally well-organized MUD, but who does not take his RP too seriously. IF a hack and slash mud, with limited accompanying RP, is the goal of your search, then Ansalon can definitely satisfy.
