TMC Note: Mud now requires connection via the mud's dedicated client, see mud website for more info. Cosrin is a well established, roleplaying and adventure MUD in a fantasy setting. Friendly and easy enough to get into, but challenging, with simply huge longevity for all players. Now, for the stat-minded, there are some 8000+ locations, with more being coded and tweaked all the time. Over 400 quests, ranging from the elementary, to the truly mind bending. Hundreds upon hundreds of foes to battle against, and a similar number of non combatant 'innocents' to add flavour around town. Eight different races, and eight character classes provide a wide range of choices when it comes to tailoring your persona, with four large Guilds to join, and sub-guilds too at later levels. The environment is non PvP, with a strong emphasis on roleplaying, the players ably assisted by the helpful staff to create a truly immersive gameworld. Help files are extensive, and all Guilds have their own mentor programs designed to ease newcomers into their new home. Cosrin is perfect for experienced roleplayers, who will fit right in and find the wealth of material they have to work with is only limited by their imagination. Cosrin is also *the* ideal choice for any true beginner, in both the roleplay and MUD sense - players use it's own trademark 'Wizard' front end to access it, which is fully configurable to your needs, but not so overwhelming that you are sent running for the hills by a three inch thick manual! Aside from the above, I can only suggest that you drop in and visit, you'll find plenty of people to help you upon your arrival, and we're always glad to see new faces across the bar! See you there...first drink is on us...

Description:
Journey through a land of epic adventure, a realm of hard won victory in a gritty fantasy setting. Set yourself against fiendish puzzles, devilish creatures and cunning traps in a fight to see who will triumph, and who will fall by the wayside. Not for the faint of heart, the roads through Cosrin are long, but the journey is well rewarded. Take part in the online adventure, in a text world of danger and mystery. Few of these have what it takes to flourish in such a world, do have you the makings of a hero within you? [1]
Legends of Cosrin is a long standing, text based, roleplaying game. We have a VERY loyal player base, intuitive help files and a very easy to understand structure. Cosrin is a completely unique game engine, nothing like you've seen in other MUDs. If you come to give us a look, you'll get 5 free logins to test things out. After that, there is a very nominal operations fee if you wish to keep playing. Also, be aware that Cosrin is an ALL AGES RPG, so foul language and sexual behaviour are not allowed. Cosrin also uses a custom interface we call the "Wizard". You will need to download that from the downloads section of our web site. It's a quick download, a quick install and you'll be off and running. [2]

Well I know that it is probably a difficult thing to convince you to stop what you're doing and come visit the MUD that I play, but I really love this game so much and I would like nothing more than for it to become a little more popular (but maybe not *too* popular, because now it feels like we are one big family and I like that), so I am going to try anyway. I first played Cosrin (when it was called Legends of Cosrin) soon after it moved from AOL to a host called Freeloader, during a time when there were easily over a hundred people playing simultaneously at peak times. For me it was an amazing experience... to be completely immersed in this world of adventure. All of these beautiful areas to explore, wonderful people to meet, roleplaying everywhere, surprises from the Gods and Heroes... It was a very social MUD (both the IC and OOC channels) and it was easy to make friends and go hunting or questing or exploring or just come up with fun little roleplays wherever you were. Well, fast forward many years... I had stopped playing MUDs (and computer games in general for the most part) when for some reason a bit of nostalgia hit me and I searched for Cosrin on google, to discover that it had been 'rebooted' with a new player database, some changes to the engine, and new lore. I was a little surprised that it still existed but was super excited, so of course I started a character immediately. That was around the end of last summer, and since then I have been playing quite a lot -- at least when my schedule has allowed for it. The player base is relatively small at the moment (I suppose on average there are only between 5 and 20 players logged in at a time), but we are all really nice and fun people, and I'm not biased at all, I swear. ;) Like I mentioned before, it feels a little bit like a small family. But it would be really really good for the MUD if we got some new players to come and join us. I suppose I should tell you some things about the game. So... there isn't PvP, except if you roleplay it. The engine for hunting and so on is really nice (in my limited opinion). There are lots of fun places to hunt, and you can make some equipment and things and so on... and I'm realizing that I'm pretty bad about talking about this. But a lot of people like the game for its engine, I think. Like any text game, hunting can get a little repetitive, but in general I think it's pretty good. And there are frequent updates which add new content, balance things, address issues, add new features... quite impressive, really. Let's see. There are several races classes, and four guilds, and the guilds are important that's... Read More

There were a series of muds created by Paul Barnett and Doug Goldner - Terris, Cosrin, and Kingdom of Heroes (Previously Wolfenburg, Defunct like the MMO.) Terris pioneered MUDS on AOL, F2P on the UK servers, and pay hourly on the American side. Terris had well over 100+ players, and word of mouth says it reached somewhere around 500+ people in it's prime. Cosrin was the second re-imagining of their 'perfect world' vision, and focused more on Player interaction and RP. They then moved onto their third world with Wolfenburg and finally achieved what they wanted - No one wanted to play it, though. Terris and Cosrin remain the love children of Paul/Doug, and I cannot speak for Terris, but Cosrin has broken away and done it's own thing. Focusing primarily on Players, RP, and Lore, the world is vast and with the complete reboot of the world, it's open to be rediscovered and the world rewritten. Old Immortals have been cast out, heroes have yet to step up, and legends are ready to be made. Cosrin: A New Dawn (AND from now on.) is ripe for the pickings. No auto combat, four guilds that are player run, built, and maintained. With completely original content built over the course of many years by the volunteer staff, Cosrin is extremely unique in what it does and will continue doing. With over eight player classes, four guilds, over 10 races (A handful of them RP driven), and all new ideas driving the content of the game. You're missing out if you haven't stopped by and at least spent a few hours checking the game out and joining in on the fun with the players and staff.

Cosrin has captured my fancy for around 8 years, since shortly after it went live on aol in 1998. It was, at the time, the only MUD I had ever played. I was captured by the roleplay and great players that were already there. It was a new world, with no great history except what we, as players, created. That was awesome. Now, the land itself has grown, and walking through seeing remnants of those stories we all lived is a wonderful thing. Those stories, those adventures, have made it a great place for new players now who can experience a world of rich fantasy, in many ways created by new players just like them, and they can add to it. All in all, a great MUD by any standard.

This game has had its claws in me, as one character or another, for the better part of the last five years. I have looked around for others, but I always keep coming back to this one. I have found the rp/hunting mix to be just about perfect; there is something for everyone here. Some days, I get tired of hunting and hunting and hunting. That's when I go and start a conversation at the healing shrine or in my guildhall. Sometimes these conversations lead to land-wide roleplays, but more often it leads to interaction with one or two other characters. Some folks think that rp has to be land-wide events, with gods and kings and heros leading the way. This MUD does have that sometimes, but it is the daily interaction roleplay that really makes LoC stand out from the crowd. Admittedly, this does require the individual players to do their part, and there are some whom either can't or won't, but overall I think Cosrin gets and keeps the players who are interested in this. As far as hunting, there are more areas being added routinely. These new areas are generally for higher-leveled players, as Cosrin has grown to include more powerful adventurers than the designers probaby envisioned. That is probably my one complaint; even though I realize that staff is very busy trying to play catch-up and keep things interesting for those who hunt for 4-8 hours daily, it is sometimes frustrating for the lower- to mid-leveled players to have to keep hunting the same areas with the same weapons. All in all, though, the staff (immortals and heroes) go out of their way to foster a fun and convincing roleplay atmosphere. I have always found them to be friendly and approachable, and they generally will work with you in the creations of special rooms and items to further your specific roleplay. You can't ask for much more than that. Anyways, give it a try and see what you think.

I am one of the older players of this game who got fed up with it, but i will try to maintain objectivity and stay clear of opinons. I have played Legends of Cosrin for 6 years and to me it became a great awesome game, slowly going down and turning into one of the worst i ever seen. I guess the best indicator of this are the players left. Long time players, a lot of whom didn't try other games ever at all. Firstly most people who left comments here are gone from the game. Most players are gone from the game now. If i was asked about the online presense it is usualy 2-10 at the less popular time of the day and 15-23 at the more popular time which is the time the american players are free from work/school. It goes as high up as ~30, but in verry rare and unlikely cases.. Last comment made here is by a game ex-player who was made staffer. I can say the RP of this game only used to be good and only thanks to factors that are no longer in game. What is left now of the RP side is this: The RP of this game is called mandatory good RP by people who play it, but it is what refered to as 'optional rp' by other games. The game design itself does not support RP, and in my personal opinion that design actualy holds the rp back. 'Global' IC channels, like shouts, that are most commonly used by players to emote a long course of events taking place in a solitude of a room. Global OOC channels like chats that constantly turn into a none related to game chat room. Lack of such things as alignment or player comperisment system that make any rp attempt of two oposing player parties into a word fight that has no end nor point. A lot of oppinionated staff members many of whom are ex-players, and instead of supporting rp they boost their friends/supporters at the account of others. On the good side there are good rp sparks between players, that can bring a lot of interest, but those are becoming more and more rare. Support from staff to good rp'ers is so optional and random that one might say that unless you give a two week notice you shouldn't expect it. The lack of PvP though seems a minor issue but added with the lack of RP demand, and the lack of Staff involvement it easily developes into things like a new charecter level 20 who claimes to be a powerfull warlock, playes an RP with a charecter level 120 and demands that old worked through charecter to die in the roleplay. That exemple is not actual, but things of this kind are common in Cosrin today as well as simply charecters who refuse to role play because logic suggests they will lose. This much for the play... LoC offers everything a MUD game should have, apart from PvP. Various things make it different from other muds. The most important is the fact we do not have PvP. You will not get attacked by other players, you can't do real damage to each other. Our land is one of adventure and partnership. You have to work together, it's tough enough fighting any of the 1000 different monster types without having to watch out for everyone who walks into your room. LoC is very newbie friendly. New players are welcomed and helped by all of us if they want and accept the help. LoC has a very extensive help system built into it. Additional to that there are very helpful files in the download area, including basic maps and manuals. You will find people are happy to help you out. If you want help from the on line immortals or heroes, then you just have to wish. There are various guilds and subguilds to join to improve your character skills and to find companions in. Different clans compete with each other and offer many possibilities to roleplay if you are willing to take them. LoC is a good mix of quests, fights and interaction with each other. There is a thriving trade between players of spells or goods. You get the best stuff from other players and not from killing something. If you need help with a roleplay such as rooms built or items created, staff will help you with those kinky little extras to add to your story. And if you tire from hunting you can always turn to the hundreds of quests, from easy to brainaddling. You have five free logins for each character you create so you can test out the various combinations of race and class without having to register for checking them out. Dive into the game for an hour or two to get the feeling how it's like.

LoC was voted #1 on mpogd.com and for good reason. It has everything a MUD game can offer, apart from pvp. The non-existance of pvp is for good reasons too and one of them, for me, is not having to watch my back for pk's coming at me from all angles on the flimsiest of pretences. True, i play pvp muds and enjoy the competition, but sometimes it's just nice to get away from it. No game can ever be perfect.. and yeah, some games are more perfect than others.. LoC ranks among the top and will remain so as long as people play MUDs. To be constructive in this review I feel I should mention LoC's imperfections. The main one being the occasional lag. Lag in any mud game is annoying at best, but If lag is detected by a member of staff, they will 'grace' the lands, which means no loss of exp or gold etc. I s'pose the only other 'imperfections' are those little niggly things that all mud games have.. also known as bugs. Of which i've never found one, but I heard someone mention one once.. If a bug is found then report it, simple as that. LoC, like most MUDs, is very friendly. New players are welcomed and helped by all of us, no exception, but is never forced on them. The help files are indepth and the handy little welcome book had all the information I needed to get me started. Anyway, the only way to see what LoC is like is to give it a go. I challenge you not to be hooked by the time you finish the quest to join the guild of your choice... Be well my friend.. and if you see me in the realm.. pop me lil tell and say hi :)

Legends of Cosrin is a fun and very addictive game. I've been playing for going on three years now, and I've only taken a couple of short breaks from it. LoC is the only game I've ever stuck this long with, be it one player or multiplayer. On a scale of 1 through 10, I would give it an 8. With it being text based, it requires imagination to "see" what's going on. And the game crashes some, but has been better within the recent months. I would defiantly recommend it, there are 5 free logons so you can get a good feel for it. And with it being only about $5 American, it is well worth it.

TopMUDSites.Com Review by on May 28, 2003
Having spent several months now trying various trial accounts to see if the game is worth paying for I conclude that its not. Upon downloading of the "wizard" you are told that its only in beta development and as such there may be crashes etc that are part of the development of the program. As for the RP. You can some it up as either a mass creation of monsters in the town (only one actual town, but it is quite large) or a war of words between players. Occasionally the staff do chip in, but this is rare and is often over run by players trying to jump in. You fight beasts with a single button, maybe two if you are trying several weapons/techniques, but they get repetitve very quickly. At times there are no more than 5 players ingame, at the most it barely reaches 50. Try and start a rp about your character being powerful and the more established characters will mock you. Try something else and you get ignored. If you want RP go elsewhere, if you want a one button basher for next to nothing this is for you
TopMUDSites.Com Review by on May 23, 2003
Well, ill be honest, you've proberbly played a MUD identicle to this, despite a previous post the engine is far from great. Its the basic Hack & Slash code with lots of different monsters and places to kill them, levels, classes, HPs, SPs etc etc The only difference is that they've taken the PvP out, unlike some MUDs all the rooms are unique, and i expect the races and classes have been modified. Now there is Roleplay, but it tends to get stale very quickly. Theres no PvP so you can't really effect anyone characters, yes theres no PK but there are plenty of MUDs that handle PK without getting rid of the PvP system. RP battles end up as ego wars, and theres really nothing you can do if someone wants to do something and they're not willing to let your character stop them. Theres no economy, staff killed that because they said it imbalenced the game. Theres no 'City' politics because Staffs reasoning is that theres a monarchy, so you dont need anything else, even though nobody has seen the supposed king for about 1-2 RL years. There are guild politics, but again, not alot they can do, they can take guild levels away, but then the RP resorts to the hack & slash because thats the only way you can get them back. As for clan RP, well you can't do anything to each other without their permission or staff help so its very limited, its ends up just groups of people who go kill stuff together. Staff though are very helpfull, but so many of the Immortals and Heroes havn't been seen for a while, i wouldn't be surprised if a fair few of the staff have quit too (lots of players have). If you like Ridgid Hack & Slash with a dash of RP, then by all means, try this out. You'll have to pay after 5 logins with a signle character and to be honest, its not worth it, there are better MUDs that cost nothing. If you have Z-Mud, a good majority of the MUDs on the list will have a similar code-base.

A great game which promotes Roleplay. If you're not too good at it you can learn from others, and from practice. If it doesn't interest you, better go somewhere else. Some do prefer to hunt their way to the top, though I think it's fair to say that the 'rockets' that do stay usually find greater enjoyment and challenge in roleplaying, and that's what keeps them there, the interaction.. Give it a try! You can play for nothing for as long as you like, although if you want to develop a permanent character you'll have to find a small fee. Try out a few different races and classes to find which you like best :) There are players of all ages, from children to much older gamers, and mental skills are wide and varied, as can be seen by perusing the message forum. Cosrin is newbie friendly, although you could find yourself lost with no-one to help you. This is unlikely, and if you're politely persistent you will be given advice at the very least. If you do come across someone who is unhelpful, don't be put off. Just as in the real world there are nice folk as well as rude ones :) Have fun and see you there!

LoC is a MUD that has managed to maintain my loyalty for over 3 years. I've tried other MUDs and always feel let down by them, subjective but true. Very easy to feel accepted, very hard to feel bored. Advancement is not too easy so as to devalue the experience, and not too hard to as to turn you off. Dedicated staff combine with very dedicated players, taken with a GREAT engine and game structure to make this a MUD without rival. I guarantee that if you give this MUD a chance, you will NOT be disappointed - frequent updates, lively IC developments, very friendly atmosphere.

TopMUDSites.Com Review by on May 5, 2003
I have been playing Cosrin for a couple of years now. I looked around at other MUDs but never found one that came close to Cosrin's mix of quests, fights and interaction. Firstly, there is no PK. This means that the emphasis is on working together and not against each other. There is a thriving trade between players of spells or goods. Whether it is enchanted rings, armour, poison or pastes you get the best stuff from other players and not from killing something. What makes Cosrin different from the other MUDs? Well, for me, it is the sense of community. Guilds have set up Mentoring systems so that new players are given advice if they wish and know where to go to get it. Most players are happy to help those in need. We have our own newspaper and a number of Clans where likeminded people can build their own smaller community. There are a lot of staff, both hidden and in game. As well as being there to code or enforce the rules, they are primarily there to roleplay. If you need help with a roleplay such as rooms built, items created or world events, then they will help. Roleplay is the lifeblood of Cosrin. You can come in with 5 free logins. After that the charge is $4.50/£3 per character per month. So come in, have a look around. Try out the combinations of class/race/guild and I hope to see you there.

Yes, this is the MUD you've been looking for. Unlike many MUDs, Cosrin is a game made both for the levellers and the roleplayers. And while that sometimes seems to cause more problems than it solves, overall it has yielded a great world, where one is very rarely bored. I, personally, tend more to the roleplay side of things, and nowhere have I found more exciting interaction than in Cosrin. There are some amazing players here, and there's a staff who's excited about making things fun for the players. Some of the lands-wise staff-influenced events can go on for several weeks, and during all this time people aren't just waiting but the next part in the storyline is going to be, but are rather influencing how things will end up. Or maybe they're writing an article about the event for the Observer, our local newspaper. The Guild and Clan structures give players a large amount of control over what happens in the world. The four Guilds are the main governing bodies, among players, and they are ruled by players elected to the Guild Master position. The Guild Master works closely along with staff (as well as his appointed Guild Lieutenants) to make real changes throughout the lands. Clans are groups of players with similar mindsets. If a group decides to form a Clan, they can go through the application process, including a certain amount of gold, and a clan history, and perhaps they will be approved. There's been a long history of Clan roleplay, with various Clan opposing each other or forming alliances, or anything else they care to do. Of course, there's no PK at all in Cosrin. This helps to make it fairly unique. In hunting and questing, cooperation with others is strongly encouraged, which leads to a great sense of community among players. There still are battles between players, but it is all in the form of RP. There are no level 120 sorcerers running around killing all the new players. We have more class than that. All in all, Cosrin truly is a land filled with wonders. Mysteries never solved abound, and new ones are constantly being added. Come pay us a visit.
