The selection of challenging yet fun MUDs continues to dwindle and Dark Pawns is looking to help solve this problem. The game is simplistic at its core, a classic hack ‘n slash set in a dark fantasy realm. The mechanics, classes and skill/spell selections are not overbearing and complex – yet they are very polished and balanced for 3-character multiplay. The selection of challenging yet fun MUDs continues to dwindle and Dark Pawns is looking to help solve this problem. The game is simplistic at its core, a classic hack ‘n slash set in a dark fantasy realm. The mechanics, classes and skill/spell selections are not overbearing and complex – yet they are very polished and balanced for 3-character multiplay. There is a wealth of solo and group content with interesting areas to explore and rewarding monsters to conquer and loot. Unlike many other MUDS available today, Dark Pawns is not easily blown through with rapid power leveling, bonus experience multiples, or any other superfluous features meant to be flashy, but turn MUDs into just one big experience grind fest. There are true challenges at every level in Dark Pawns and the MUD does not hold your hand. There’s a small, but plentiful enough player-base to assist any newcomers through the full spectrum of the game and still 20+ years later, veterans still have yet to discover all Dark Pawns has to offer. We have a wonderful Immortal and Implementation team who are extremely active. We have a dedicated build staff that has been steadily improving outdated zones and creating new and innovative zones. In the past 12 months we have introduced over 2500 new rooms. The endgame keeps getting better and harder. We are constantly striving to improve our mud for new players as well. Dark Pawns is a very fun and rewarding MUD, beautiful in its simplicity. There aren't 100 different races that barely differ from each other and there aren't 50 different classes full of useless skills. Three melee classes and three magic-using classes that allow you to enjoy the world within through their eyes and skills. Classes compliment each other well and you're allowed three characters on at a time, letting you have anything from a traditional tank/damage dealer/healer combo to solo mobs or two damage dealers/support classes and a healer to help other players take down larger foes. I really love a few things about Dark Pawns: one would be the distribution of gear. Some items are available by killing a fairly easy mob yet are considered an endgame or at least an essential mid-level item. Other pieces of rare gear have very low drop rates and/or are on big mobs that require help from others. This always gives you something to do and strive for. Another thing I love is the remort system. This allows your base character to turn into a more powerful version of the original class you pick. A mere thief can grow into an assassin, learning new skills, gaining more hit points and hitting harder. You can also continue to remort to keep getting better and better starts until you gain "perfect" stats so that you no longer have to eat or drink. The combat and mobs you fight are all very cool. With combat it's exciting when you start to get enough decent gear to slash/pierce more difficult mobs hard, contributing to the fight more. You have to use certain skills depending on the fight, like a warrior's bash to knock a magic-using mob to the ground or a thief's circle to backstab during a fight, doing maximum damage while your tank takes hits. Better have a good tank that can rescue you in a moment's notice or you'll get OBLITERATED or EVISCERATED by the mob six times in one round, halving your hp. The areas all have cool room descriptions and there are some very unique enemies within. Some of my favorite times were going to Amber castle to kill ghosts with my clan mates or to Grey Keep to kill Hiscdrezzez, the snake-like bastard whose room is in a no spell zone so you have to use flee/regen tactics to earn the valuable gear he drops. Other zones require waterwalk or quick traversal to get through safely but always provide good xp or cool eq to be had. Lastly, the players. I'm not the roleplaying type and neither were these guys from what I could gather, which was a relief to me. Everyone was talking on a personal level when I joined and yet they made me feel welcome right from the beginning, answering any questions I had even when I felt annoying or knew I should just figure it out on my own but wanted to lessen my chances dying.... Been on DP for a while now. The mud is very addictive due to its various challenges and styles of play. Very user friendly with a well established clan system and a wide variety of personalities. Come try it out!

Dark Pawns is a mud that hooks you from the start, and keeps you coming back for more. Since 1997 I have been coming back to play Dark Pawns. And every momment spent in the game has been worth my time because it is challenging, entertaining, and always a place to sit back and relax with friends for a good time, or to rant. We feature an all original world that is contiguous in nature (this mean no zones thats don't fit!). The theme is Dark Fantasy, and we stay Dark Fantasy. RP is not a requirement, but multiple characters is encouraged (3 max). Stop by to play a game that is an all encompassing, exceptional experience. If you enjoy your time on Dark Pawns, you will keep coming back for more, and love it.

An alien in a foreign land; a conspicuous neophyte oblivious of the instruments necessary for survival in an uncharted terrain. Such is the precedent for newcomers on the majority of Multi-User Domains. Dark Pawns and it's denizens, it must be said, strive to deviate from what today must be considered the norm: Incognizant novices endeavoring stature and caliber in a newfound world, but denied their place mostly in light of his or her colleagues' obstinacy in the practice of helping those who require sustenance. Dark Pawns epitomizes the article 'user-friendly.' Previous to Dark Pawns, I would frequent anywhere from eight to ten MUDs routinely, establishing a bias or deference to none, but instead maintaining a devout devotion to each. (I know this must sound pretty oxymoronic, but such were my insatiable intentions to feel that I 'belonged'—here or there.) Needless to say, such convoluted, megalomaniac tendencies proved incompetent in the development of stature or sentiment of belonging on any of the various MUDs I involved myself with. Dark Pawns stands a place apart from the all-too-usual obscure, opaque worlds whose solitary function must be to discourage its newcomers from sustaining his or her growth and evolution; the world of Dark Pawns will absorb and indulge you, and you should never wish to forfeit the continuance of your advancement. Help files are extensive, possibly to the point of being undue and very much all-entailing. Verily, the citizens of Dark Pawns should be obliged to assist in your inceptive progress whenever you might inquire for direction; they will not, however, heed such requests as purveying “uber” (for lack of a better expression) equipment or gratis leveling to the point where you coexist as a well-developed player who still cannot navigate the most undemanding of regions: Such is your own commission. Should you find a particular logistic to be simply beyond your comprehension, the populace of Dark Pawns will point you and your query in the right direction; but its duty is not to mother you. Ultimately, your progression is of your own accord; and you should find that you must shape your own economy. Your desires to establish stature, distinction and ultimately, a sense of belonging will not go unheeded, so long as the proviso of genuinely wishing to do so is requited. And when you should establish a feel for the logistics of this sincerely exclusive and inimitable world, you will find your inclination to stay permanent, your desires to navigate cryptic, incog territories voracious.
