Lotherius' 5 Minute Mud Review: ---------------------------------------------- Caveat: My opinion based on first impressions. ---------------------------------------------- GenericMUD (GenericMUD.com 4000) Codebase: Apparently Diku. Size : 7701 Rooms Players : Only myself visible. Good: 1) Pueblo Support 2) Credits Visible on the opening screen. 3) Race/Class help available 4) Gives directions to newbies up front. 5) Decent number of areas. 6) They seem to have detailed weather code installed. 7) Ranged weapons. A good feature that is on surprisingly few muds. Bad: 1) No new prompt after *** Press return on race/class helpfile during creation, results in That is not a race! after you follow the instructions and hit return. Minor, but still, it's a detail. 2) Enabling colour requires typing auto color. No helpfiles were found about this under color, colour or ansi. 3) Requires Rent. Saving grace is that it tells you exactly where to go to rent. 4) Subsequent logins ask for screen lines and widht every time. Couldn't this be saved? 5) When you turn on autoexits, the ansi code gets broken sometimes, so you see a 7m after the exits, and yellow colour bleeds out. 6) Many of them are stock areas. 7) Pueblo commands are are broken as well in several places (I know, not an issue for most people). Typos. 9) You receive 378 exp, and need -201 exp for level 2. (self explanatory) 10) Several of the helps listed when you type help do not exist. 11) The areas I saw break several rules of good area-writing. They address the player directly, telling them what they feel and do. If you're looking for high-quality writing, pass. My opinion: At first I was inclined to say it was really horrible. However, I had to back away for a bit and realize not everyone likes the same things I do. If you're an old-time gamer, and looking for a mud that takes you back to some basics without all the gadgetry of many newer muds, then this one might be for you. There are lots of classes and races to choose from, but the game doesn't look like snippet-heaven like some do. However, if you're looking for a modern MUD with the kind of features users have come to expect in the last 5 years, then this isn't the mud for you. Lotherius' Game Rating: Pass. You've seen it before.
