Description
Iconoclast MUD has been in continuous operation since 1996, making us one of the longest-running Cyberpunk/Gothic-themed MUDS on the Internet. We've long been one of the top Sci-Fi RP MUDS listed on the search engines, and a significant portion of our players have been with us since the beginning for that very reason. Iconoclast is set at the dawn of the 22nd Century, and is based around the people and events associated with the free city of New Aurora. Genetic alteration, cybernetic enhancements, neural interfaces, excessive violence, corporate control, rampant gang and cult activity and a worldwide Matrix are accepted as the norm. The 6000+ room Iconoclast world itself is 100% original, and designed to be realistic without being detrimental to play. The focus is on quality, not quantity. Our customized code (a Circle 3.0 derivative) encourages role- playing while allowing a more traditional hack-and-slash style of play for those who enjoy that. Combat works differently than on other MUDS; there are no levels or experience points as such, but there is plenty of room for self-directed advancement to high levels of power and influence.

Iconoclast began in March of 1996 as a hazy concept of a futuristic world that would incorporate everything that needed incorporating. In short, it was a reconstruction of everything, a world that represented the world, but for a few decades of difference. Genetic experimentation, cybernetics, neural interfaces, megacorporations, gangs and cults, millennial panic... topics the Cyberpunks had been writing about for years, now finally accepted as essential elements in all writing, and in all things. Reality has finally caught up with science fiction. And reality is, as it turns out, scarier than the wildest Cyberpunk nightmares. In a way, the world of Iconoclast exists all around us, a frightening fantasy that is no longer just fantasy. So what happens when you take the present day and project it 100 years into the future? 100% original world, theme and races, Iconoclast is a wonderful roleplaying environment for gamers at any level. Using highly-modified circle code, you encounter a unique gaming environment that effectively combines realism, raw science and cyberpunk elements to create a fascinating experience. [2]

After searching fruitlessly for several months for a cyberpunk mu*, I finally came across Iconoclast. I've been playing off and on for about three years now, and it has been a truly rewarding experience. A player can come, with any level of roleplaying experience, and learn a ton, walking away feeling very rewarded. With a 100% completely original story and race system, it feels like a lot of love was put into it. Iconoclast is also a very player-driven environment. If admin notices enough people having difficulty with an area, it's changed. If someone suggests a useable idea, it's often implemented. Players have even been known to own bars, shops and homes. While the combat system leaves a lot to be desired, it is usuable. But the main reason people come to Iconoclast is for the roleplaying. Great examples of what can be done in this game can be found on the game's wiki (foofus.com/cgi-bin/wiki). It's a player-maintained database filled with player profiles, rp logs and helpful ideas for the whole game. I recommend this mud to anyone who has any sort of passion for originality and great RP.
