Description

Description:
Solace is a Multi-user Dungeon (MUD) based on the Dragonlance world. It has been expanded and improved for 9+ years. Role-playing is enforced, and required for joining clans. Player-killing is permitted, and encouraged if for role-playing reasons. We offer 11 balanced classes, 10 races, more than 1000 unique skills and spells and more than 200 unique areas, clans and societies. We have a clan system based around 6 major cabals; the Heretics, the Cobar, Tower of High Sorcery, Knights of Solamnia, Knights of Takhisis and the Guardians of Justice, all locked in a constant struggle for survival, with relentlessly changing alliances and the ability to take the powers of a rival clan. Characters may progress through 35 mortal levels, and 20 Hero levels to further increase their power and reputation. In addition to the hundreds of skills and spells available from creation, a player may acquire several rare, extraordinary skills from manuals. These are precious and uncommon items, not easily found. As a player grows in the world, they may choose from a variety of special feats, ranging from a simple increase in health to more complex and specific powers. Each character becomes more unique with each feat, and no two players are ever the same. Each Immortal has his or her own Shrine, and as a reward for consistent and exemplary roleplay may invite a mortal to join and bear a special mark of the Gods. These elevated mortals become focal points around whom quests and other tasks are undertaken. [1]

Well, I have been playing this MUD for roughly 6 years, its gone through a lot of changes in that time, a lot of people have joined and left, and recently hard work by the Immortal team has started to bring new players to this world. Some people submitted bad reviews of this MUD, and there is a perfectly good reason. Back when this MUD started, it was just a collection of closely related people who enjoyed to kill each other, with minimal roleplay involved. As this world has changed and matured, trying to create a really good atmosphere of exploration, interaction AND explosive battles, the "old" playerbase became extremely bitter and angry, believing this MUD to be their personal playground. These days the MUD welcomes new, inexperienced players, and does not tolerate OOC interaction and cheating, and so I believe it has become a much, much better and fresher world for it. Thank you :)

If you haven't entered the Solace community yet, you may be about to embark on the most exciting adventure you possibly can on the internet. I am from the western U.S., going to college and I have played this MUD for about 3 1/2 years now. It is not quite as populated as some others I have tried, but I have not found any other virtual fantasy worlds to be nearly as enjoyable or engaging as Solace. The administrators have improved CONSIDERABLY since the days when they were believed to be corrupt, and a tremendous amount of work has been done on creating new areas, skills, quests and just about anything else to make the players happy and keep the experience fresh. Once you start up you'll probably be really confused, but just give it time. Read the helpfiles and don't be afraid to ask for help from people in the realms as well. It might be a little frustrating, but exploring the realms as a newbie is an experience we all look back on fondly. Also check out the webpage, as there is a comprehensive forum where you can get your ideas heard and find out the latest. Pretty soon your character will be dressed in exotic equipment and you'll have put so much work into him/her that you actually care what happens to him/her. Seriously, when I saw this game... I thought it looked stupid. But I gave it a chance, and the honest-to-God truth is that this it the funnest game I have ever played! I have tried everything from WC3, the whole Quake series, CS, Diablo I/II, GTA3/4/VC; and I have to say that (despite all the eye/earcandy of those games) nothing is as consisantly entertaining as this game which has no sound or graphics. Don't believe me? Try it.

I have been playing this mud since 1999, on and off, though never due to some changes i did not like. Overall i think it is a great mud, even if it did change from 1999 quite a lot. When it started it had a totally different imm staff(or rather just one imm) and things were handled differently. Nowadays some heavy changes are undertaken to make the MUD balanced and more interesting, and imms do devote a lot of effort to it, though some may not appreciate it. One thing, that is unchangable is the unique atmosphere, which i have not found anywhere else. If you like the Dragonlance saga, this is the place to be. Hope you can experience the same great times, that i have.

It's first MUD I've played ever. Actually I think that's brilliant one.. Friendful environment; nice, large and easy-to-remember world. Immortal team are unstoppably adding new features and fixes reported bugs quickly. This MUD is not very common but it makes special taste as you can both find harsh PK and silent exploring here. If you don't like big and crowded MUDs, Solace awaits for you!

I've played in this MUD about 6 years. And it was fun. But after last reorganization (PWIPE) there is no fun anymore! Unfortunately some of current immortals are using their place to cheat. And I must agree: every word, that wrote Hedaya in his review is true.

Remains of a once great game. Totally unbalanced, with tons of unapplieble skills, world full of a little group of OOC friends with a few exceptions. Most of Imms are from the lower end of previvous playerbase, unskilled and, well, silly, destroying what's left from Solace. I would not recommend to play this game, there are a lot of much better MUDs you can choose.

I'm sorry for my previous crap review. Actually i'm playing this mud for over 6 years :) Sometimes there are conflicts between players and immortals. But there is always elder immortal (creater of the mud) who make right desicions. Meet on battlefield in solace :P

If you like no-pk and no-loot mud then you should try solace out. But if, being evil thief, you will try to steal something or get something from fallen enemie's corpse gods will punish ya hard by stripping your eq and many other nasty things. Little cute mud with very few people online who don't kill each other.

I am a grandmohter, and I started playing Solace almost 5 years ago. Before Solace, I didn't even know what MUD was, or RP-ing, let alone PK-ing. This was something new to me, totally. Solace was my first MUD, so once I discovered other games, I looked into them, but always came back to Solace. Why? Because I found it was the easiest to learn, with no complicated creation. Not only that, I found MOST players to be fun, and helpful. Some more than others of course. Solace did go through a rough patch, when it was returned. But now, with NEW IMM's, and some previous fun ones, it is changing, with the addition of color to terrain, changes to spells/skills/empowerment layouts. No one likes change, as it takes them out of their comfort zones. But the changes taking place in Solace at the moment are for the advancement and improving of the game. Solace IS growing, with new players venturing into the world, to taste of it's fun. No matter the game, there are always people who whine and complain. That's life. Don't let these people spoil the fun you can find in Solace. I extend best wishes to all past players who have left for whatever reasons. Everyone is entitled to their comment. This is after all, a review, not a mud slinging match. :) If you are looking for a MUD to play, give Solace a try. You just might be surprised, and find you enjoy it. If not, oh well. Hope you find one you do like then.

Well, when i saw last post i just could't keep silent. One ill turn deserves another. First, lets get something straight, maybe i do want to play in send-box but i am sure that its not gonna be yours. Second, if you are blind or cant read i already said that Solace was a great mud and that I loved it and played it for 7 years, till Kiri and imms from 'DoE' (another failed mud project) came to admin it. They all used to play Solace long time agoe, but they continualy whined how this is unbalanced or that. Then they came to power. My god just look at what does mud look like now. Assassins compleatly ruined, cant hold shield and item in hands and have same number of attacks as they did before. Viper strikes fails to perform on 100%, nightfist, strangle, only can hit physical unlike before,....and many more, i can go on if you insist. Necromansers, ones great spell 'power word kill' now totaly ruined, just because someone didn't like (order all resc necromaser;c pwk target), minions weakened by double if not tripple,necromansers cant solo kill a stronger mob, since all mobs wich have some meaning are almost immune(high resistance) to phisical and do area damage, wich leavs your pets dead in few rounds and you make them for so long of real time, minions cant be hasted, bless,frenzyed(unlike before), got striped of dual wield(minions),...and many more, I can go on if you insist. Abjurers, got 'tuned' in displacemant(1.5 years agoe or so), and they are not an offencive class. Autocasting items got 'tuned' and for exaple staff of stars wich used to autocast meteor shower and hit target 3-4 times now can hit only ones. Alternation magis lost sanctuary just because some said its to strong to have offencive form and sanctuary, and its not to strong to have a warrior over 2k hps with 5 attack + haste(can quaff sanctuary(reaciveing 1/2damage)), wich can do far greater damage then Alteration magi with best form. Then when you shift in form you lose spell enlarge (unlike before) and it has a big role, save vs spell lose there meaning in form greatly, since new svs was introduced, svs depend on stats, and forms never had good stats(cept 1). Autocasting items no longer work in form (unlike before). Invokers, some would say they benifited from ability to learn all 4 elemental trees but there is always BUT :), they lost many things in return, brewing of sanctuary, permanency wich is last spell in invokers spelllist and found only in spellbooks is totaly crap this days, nothing smart can be made permanent like sanctuary, hard skin, stone skin, ... This days at best you can have fly permanent wich you always can cast for 24 hours or so, passdoor (semi-usles), wizard watch (this has some meaning but again you can cast it for 12 hours so no real need for permanenting something like it). offancive... Well, I have never written down any reviews but since I saw the one from Ghael, I decided to show you my opinion. I play Solace during one year, and I'm playing it nowadays. And Solace gives me much feelings, emotions, fun and communication. I really enjoy the game. I have found friends, I have found the work on Solace site, which I enjoy too. Solace is the only one game I play to, cause it gives me everything I want to get and I'm satisfied. Imm Team do much for Solace, interconnection with players, many changes, leading to more balance system. They have real life as every you but they still do their best for lovely Solace and give large part of their time. For us, for players. We have many newbie players, who was searching for DragonLance theme and have found it at least. Many old players, who dropped to play, return and enjoy. On the forum (and even in game) you may ask any question and many peoples gladly help you with Those, who whine that they miss old system - well, it's wrong. If the game would stay on one level, it will lead to the end. If you dont understand something, dont say that it's impossible and awful. Time pass and you'd understand. Anyway, if somebody play Solace for 7 years and have nothing good to say, so he should think what the matter with him, to spoil the time on such "useless" mud. Or may be he wanted to play in sand-box. It doesnt matter for me. I know the only one - I really like this game. Just come and try, beggining could be hard, but we will help. What can i say, where to start. I been playing it from 1998 to 2005, and it was promecing mud till the day they(imms)started to power down things, removeing spells, skills, makeing same almost not usebal, 100% skill failing to perform, permanency spell useless, con death, age death, ooc became to obvius and to frequent, imms never helping when you need help or never around and always rude, and so on. While doing that powerdown they never lowered mobile power so at the end you needed to prepare like mad to kill a simple mobile(like Ariakas) I realy loved and enjoyed playing Solace but it went bad like most good things. My suggestion to you all is not to get involved to this mud at all, because it's a waist of time and nervs. Try finding something better.

Greatest mud i v ever playd. i play it about 4-5 years. It s very professional mud. lotsa areas, features, amazing playkilling. i played a lot of muds before - and there was no such athmosphere. I recomend you to try, you will not be disappointed.

I'm playing Solace since 2000 and I can state it's one of the best MUDs I saw (I played Aardwolf, CF, Achaea and several other MUDs). Solace has the most convenient system of command parsing - you can shorten name of any spell / skill / object name / pc/npc name. Advanced communication system / moods system, I didn't saw such before. A lot of objects with special features and imbued spells, a lot of mobiles you can interact with, a lot of areas to explore. Nice clan wars.. most of my characters were clanned. And, yes, unique role-playing atmosphere and nice players. no even a single piece of OOC everywhere. Solace is, perhaps, a best of mix of role-playing and PKilling. I saw MUDs which were better by one of criterions, but lacked the other. I recommend Solace to all who are interested in advanced roleplay-enforcing player-killing MUDs based on DragonLance.

best mud every...great game..suggestion to make it more interesting make a war..great fun that would be..the help key needs a little updating because it is kinda old and not always useful..money gotten when sacrifing corpses needs to be higher..and sacrificing items needs to be higher as well..other than that great fun..especially with friends..
